What’s new in Android 13 Beta 1
The first novelty of Android 13 Beta 1 indicated by the version name. Changing the Developer Preview family name to Beta means it’s no longer an unstable developer release to be a Beta for users who want to try Android 13 now, and Google improved stability of this version to be able to be already day by day.
In this release, Google continues to focus on Privacy and Security in Android 13releasing in Beta 1 improvements to previously released features, such as new notification permission, new photo picker, themed app icons, improved localization and language support, among other news features.
Android 13 Beta 1 also introduces a small number of new features such as more granular permissions to have access to media files. Until now, when an app wanted to play media files shared on the storage, its permission gave access to all kinds of media files. To improve user privacy and security, in Android 13 we will find a new set of permissions that request access to a specific file type:
- READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (for images and photos)
- READ_MEDIA_VIDEO (for videos)
- READ_MEDIA_AUDIO (for audio files)
Thus, if a player needs to access our internal storage to play our music, we will only have to authorize him to access the music and audio files of our device, without having to authorize him to access n any media file, so starting with Android 13, music players will no longer have to ask for permission to access our images and videos.
