Nearly two and a half years have passed since Apple announced a new CarPlay that would extend Apple’s system to the entire car dashboard. At least for those who were prepared to have multiple screens etc. It was at WWDC 2022 and as surprising as it may seem, not much else is known.
And that’s it Today there is not a single car on the market compatible with the new CarPlay. There will be some and in fact the first models were announced a few months ago, but they have not yet arrived on the market. Likewise, other information has been provided which we believe is worth reviewing at this stage.
Unless there’s a surprise, there will be no “old” cars with the new CarPlay
First of all, it must be said that it is Apple which must reach an agreement with the manufacturers to implement the new system. As you may already know, the new CarPlay integrates new applications which are used, among other things, to control certain elements of the vehicle such as tire pressure, door closing or even the fuel and/or battery level.
In addition, as we already explained at the beginning, the idea is that the new CarPlay is present on several screens. Considering this situation, there must be complete communication between the vehicle and the car and therefore its implementation in vehicles already launched on the market for a longer time is not so easy.
In fact, for vehicles that barely have a screen, this is practically ruled out. For mid-range and high-end cars already launched on the market and which have several touch supports its implementation is not completely excluded. However, given the time that has passed since the announcement and that the first compatible vehicles are new models, the most reasonable thing is not to hope that this CarPlay 2 will reach our “old” cars.
Only two premium brands will have CarPlay this year
It’s been almost a year since, after a lot of waiting, we finally had news of the first cars compatible with the new CarPlay. Were Aston Martin and Porschetwo manufacturers specializing in high-end vehicles. Both confirmed that this same 2024 they would have their first cars with this CarPlay.
Specifically, Aston Martin confirmed DB12 coupe and DB12 convertiblewhile Porsche did not specify modelsalthough it followed the same idea of launching at least one model that could be compatible with the new CarPlay this year.
However, as the year progressed, doubts grew. We are about to start October and we still don’t know anything about these cars. Not even the Aston Martin, since they have not yet presented these two car models and there are no rumors about an upcoming presentation.
It is obviously possible to wait until December 31, but everything indicates that a possible delay in the manufacture of vehicles. This surely has little or nothing to do with the new CarPlay, since in the end it will not be the main feature of the cars. If they are ultimately not launched this year, the manufacturers will have to explain.
More car brands confirmed, but not for this year
The fact that the new CarPlay will debut on Aston Martin and Porsche cars may raise doubts and make consumers believe that it will be an exclusive system for the high end. Nothing could be further from the truth, since They will also reach other manufacturers who sell not only high-endbut also mid-range cars.
- Acura
- Audi
- Ford
- Honda
- Infiniti
- Jaguar
- Land Rover
- Lincoln
- Mercedes-Benz
- Nissan
- polar star
- Renault
- Volvo
These manufacturers are considering integrating the new CarPlay into some of their vehicles, even if It remains to be seen in which models and when. This last question is perhaps the most topical at present, but it remains unknown. What is clear is that this will not be the case in 2024 since even the first confirmed ones (Aston Martin and Porsche) will not arrive in time.
Will this CarPlay reach low-end vehicles?
The importance of low-end cars is demonstrated by the ranking of the best-selling cars of the year, where utility vehicles like the Dacia Sandero emerge. A car that is also compatible with the “old” CarPlay like many others.
This last point is precisely a good example of the fact that the new CarPlay could end up reaching the lower ranges of the market. Of course, he emphasizes that it would be staggered as has already happened with current CarPlay. The Apple system debuted in higher level cars to conquer the rest of the ranges over the years. The same goes for the possibility of using it wirelessly.
At the end technology and driving evolve hand in hand and the most avant-garde advances first conquer the most expensive models, becoming more popular over the years and ultimately reaching practically all models. With the new CarPlay we already see that its landing in the high range is not even clear, so we don’t even know when they will reach the low ranges, but we have to expect that they will eventually do so if for the needs of screen and communication technologies the vehicles are compatible.
