USB-C is coming to more and more Apple devices, but Lightning still has a few years to live!
THE Apple’s transition to USB-C port It is nearing completion. After using the Lightning connector as standard on all its devices, the Cupertino company has gradually adopted USB-C, a more versatile port and widely used in the technology industry in recent years.
With this Monday’s update to the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad accessories, which now have USB-C ports, it appears Apple is getting closer to removing the Lightning connector altogether. However, some devices are still resistant to this change.
Apple’s latest Lightning devices
Currently, the only Apple products that still have the Lightning port are:
- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE: These iPhone models, especially the iPhone SE, are the latest representatives of the Lightning era in Apple’s smartphone lineup. The next generation of iPhone SE is expected to adopt the USB-C port, which would make these models the last to use Lightning.
- First generation Apple Pencil: Although the second-generation Apple Pencil already has a USB-C port, the first-generation model is still compatible with older iPads and retains the Lightning connector.
- Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad (without Touch ID): Despite other keyboards upgrading to USB-C, this particular model still uses Lightning. Apple will likely release a USB-C version in the future, but for now this remains an exception.
How much longer will we have to wait for the switch to USB-C for all Apple devices?
Apple is likely delaying full adoption of USB-C due to several factors. On the one hand, You may have a large inventory of Lightning components that you haven’t used yet. Additionally, compatibility with third-party accessories could be affected if all devices migrate to USB-C. Finally, Keeping certain models with Lightning allows Apple to offer cheaper options or options with specific features to different market segments.
Despite these exceptions, Apple is heading toward a future without Lightning. With increasing regulatory pressure and consumer demands for greater standardization, It’s only a matter of time before all Apple devices use the USB-C port.
Universal adoption of USB-C will not only make users’ lives easier, By allowing them to use a single cable to charge multiple devices, it will also help reduce the generation of e-waste by reducing the number of cables and adapters on the market.
In short, even if Lightning still has a few years of life in certain specific devices, Apple’s future is clearly linked to USB-C. As the company continues to update its products, we can expect the Lightning connector to become a relic of the past.
