It looks like the ear pads won’t be the last interchangeable part of the AirPods Max. iFixit, which had already taken the headset apart a few weeks ago, has published more details in its guide now that it has had more time to go through all the parts. And surprise: it seems that the headband of the Airpods Max can be interchangeable.

Headphones that are more customizable than they appear
Apple took the time and space to separately identify the color of the banner on the AirPods Max packaging – most notably on the sticker, which is traditionally the last thing finalized for the box of each product. The colors of the headband, like the colors of the ear pads, do not have to match the metal ear cups. pic.twitter.com/PM6asbIaHi

There are more clues which suggest that Apple intended or at least originally intended to offer these headbands as an interchangeable accessory. In AirPods Max boxes, as you can see in the image above, the color of the headset and its headband can be distinguished separately. Additionally, the headband tips are connection ports (similar to the Lightning port, by the way) that may well be able to transmit data and power between the two side speakers.
In 9to5Mac, they also point out that the most recent beta of iOS 14.4 describes the type of headband worn by the AirPods Max. This could be a sign that Apple could start sell the headbands separately, so they can be personalized with additional purchases. As always, we’ll have to wait and see if these high-end headphones still have any tricks up their sleeve.
