Apple’s goals unify all streaming content in the ‘Apple TV’ app. Something we have already seen with the arrival of its own platform, Apple TV+, in November 2019 and which we have remembered again in its recent redesign with tvOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3. Even visionOS shares this idea.
And in addition to being the application to which we must access to watch Apple series like “Ted Lasso” or films like “The Moon Killers”, it also hosts content from other platforms to which we subscribe. And this has many advantages, but also some disadvantages.
What are the advantages of seeing everything in the same application?
In some ways, the term “Apple TV” is confusing. Apple uses it to name its digital receiver that connects to televisions and has tvOS as its operating system. It also calls the application present on this device and on other devices of the company. And to top it all off, its streaming platform is called almost the same “Apple TV+”, with this final “+” which should be read as “plus”.
What we’re talking about here is application. For three and a half years now allows you to localize content from many non-Apple platforms. Something extremely interesting so that you don’t have to navigate through the different applications when you want to see something. In “Apple TV” we can find both a tab in which everything is mixed, as well as a section for each platform to better distinguish them. Since it also has an identical interface in each of them, we quickly got used to it.
This has some incentives from ‘Apple TV’ that each platform’s apps don’t have. For example, being able to get detailed information about the actors, directors and producers of each content and see what other work they have done. Based on these, we can find all the series, films and programs in which they have participated.
Also in ‘Apple TV’ we find the old platform of rental and purchase of films. And we say old because it’s really something that came from the defunct iTunes for almost two decades, so there you will also have access to all those movies that you bought digitally on the platform, even if it was ago many years.
What the “Apple TV” app doesn’t do
Unfortunately, it’s not all pretty. Having access to all your streaming content in one app is nice, but it has one obvious flaw: requires having installed the original applications for each platformgiven that when we give the play Any of these contents automatically open the player in the application in question.
Hey, it’s still useful and practical because it doesn’t force us to search for this content manually in the original application, but in the end it adds a few extra seconds of waiting that we wouldn’t have if we searched for it directly in the original application. Likewise, this does not serve to save space on the iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, since these applications must remain installed and connected at all times.
The other major flaw it presents is not a problem as such, since it is ultimately quite obvious, even if it can be confusing for many: does not save money on subscriptions. In other words, if we do not pay for the service of these other platforms, we will not be able to access them from their applications or from “Apple TV”.
Apple’s negotiations with Paramount were recently leaked, including the idea of creating a bundle of subscriptions to their platforms at a lower price. However, nothing more has been heard about it and it is not clear if it will be something that reaches USA.
Likewise, it should be noted that Not all platforms can be integrated with “Apple TV”. Yes, there is a long list that we will discuss below that includes many of the most important ones, but not all. Without going any further, Movistar Plus+ is not included.
