imagine having an Apple Watch that takes advantage of part of its bracelet to display more notifications, more contextual information, alternative uses, etc. It’s something we’ve talked about many times: an Apple Watch band capable of changing color, of being several things at once.
The company’s latest patent goes just in that direction. In a volume of more than 20 pages and more than a thousand words, the company develops its plan for the future:
“The display module may include a display substrate with a front surface, a back surface, and a display area on the front surface. A series of interconnects extend across the display substrate from the surface front to rear surface. An array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are located in the display area and are electrically connected to the interconnect array, and one or more driver circuits are located on the rear surface of the display substrate.
An Apple Watch with a bracelet-display
In truth, it would be the greatest innovation seen on an Apple Watch in its entire history, as the viewing area would not be limited to a rigid area of the face. According to the documentation itself, this would involve using new manufacturing materials, opting for an OLED panel:
OLED technology typically includes a layer of an organic compound over a pixel area and a back panel of thin-film transistors (TFTs) to turn each individual pixel on or off. An OLED display operates without a backlight and can display deep black levels. The organic compound layer is sensitive to air and moisture, which can lead to screen degradation. OLED screens are often encapsulated with a rigid glass cover to protect the organic compound from air and moisture.
In short, it would be a flexible display module that covers a good part of the band of the device: “The visualization module also includes a graphical user interface (GUI) managerto control the information displayed on the display substrate, the display substrate comprising a first display zone associated with a face of the portable electronic device and a second display zone associated with a band of the portable electronic device. looking forward to seeing something like this.
