Yesterday Xiaomi’s presentation event took place with new products becoming official just before the start of MWC in Barcelona. Xiaomi has become one of the central points of this edition not only for the presentation of the new Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which arrive in Europe, but also for presenting its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7.
This model was officially announced in China, where will be produced in the company’s new factories, the HyperCast. Although it has not yet entered the production line (it is expected to do so throughout 2024), Xiaomi wanted to bring a test unit so that any visitor to the show can see it.
We had the opportunity to See it up close and talk to some Xiaomi experts, who explained to us what sets this car apart above all. And it is clear that software is one of them. It’s all about HyperOS, the new platform that unites the user with the car and the home.
[Human x Car x Home]
Xiaomi is one of the companies that has been working the longest to create its own. This is something that we have been able to verify recently with the Xiaomi 14 series, which Thanks to the standard inclusion of HyperOS, they can control, for example, devices linked to the Xiaomi Home application from the notification bar. Even Google hasn’t integrated Google Home yet.
HyperOS is not just a renewal of MIUI, but a new one with its own core that allows for much greater product interoperability. And it’s not that one of the three pillars is the car. In Xiaomi’s strategy, one of its main managers explained that the part Human These were wearable devices worn by the user, such as watches, cell phones or tablets. The section Home It focused on the home automation ecosystem, such as air fryers, vacuum cleaners, cameras, etc.
Finally, the section Car It was focused on mobility, with the Xiaomi SU7 as the maximum exhibitor. Clearly Xiaomi designed this car to be interoperable with its other products, even if for this it had to completely redo the operating system of all its products. This is especially important considering the hardware the vehicle has, from cameras everywhere to a Lidar sensor designed for autonomous driving that is very small and goes almost unnoticed.
Xiaomi SU7
At MWC, the Xiaomi SU7 is the star of the brand’s pavilion, although unfortunately it is somewhat isolated and, although it can be seen in detail, it has not been possible to enter or test its operating system. Despite this, it attracts a lot of attention, especially because of the blue color with touches of yellow, which can be found on the Brembo brake calipers.
The unit that was exposed is the more powerful of the two, called Xiaomi SU7 Max, equipped with 4-wheel drive, and a range of up to 800 km, but according to the Chinese cycle, a little less demanding than the European cycle. If it arrives in our country, we should expect a WLTP range possibly between 600 and 700 km.
This unit It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, more precisely in 2.78 seconds. The maximum speed, electronically limited, is 265 km/h, well above what may be necessary in any circumstance, short of going to Germany or putting the car on a race track.
Price and arrival in Europe
Although we asked, at Xiaomi They have not confirmed to us that this model will leave China, at least for the moment. This is understandable given that even China has not yet started production and there could be delays. In addition, the domestic market of this country is very large and Xiaomi will surely find it easier to compete there, in a market that it knows perfectly, before considering the international jump.
This is what brands like SAIC or Geely did, which only after having had a strong penetration in China did they launch into foreign markets, from Asia-Pacific to the Europe. Xiaomi has a very strong brand image on our continentbut the sale of electric cars has not yet taken off as expected.
Regarding the price, there are rumors that the cheapest model could be around 45,000 dollars, but given the technology it has This SU7 makes more sense to compete with a Tesla Model S than against a Tesla Model 3. And while the latter costs around 40,000 dollars in Europe, the Model S costs almost double. It is possible that Xiaomi does not want to position its car by price, and then has to move to another level, as happened with smartphones. It would be logical to expect a price of around 60,000 dollars, but at the moment everything is just speculation.
