Thanks to the dictation function of iOS, we can write any text in any system app just by saying it aloud. A most comfortable and interesting resource that we will undoubtedly miss if for some reason it fails. Beyond the tricks and hidden features of message dictation, luckily, we have several resources to bring it back easily.
A really useful and comfortable function that we always want to have available
It is really rare that the dictation function fails on our iPhone or iPad, but if it does, it is important that we can fix it easily. We have several resources, the first is simply restart our iPhone or iPad, which usually solves many situations like this. If after restarting it still doesn’t work, make sure you are connected to the internet, we can do this by loading any website from Safari.
Let’s also look no external microphone connected, neither wired headphones nor via bluetooth. Let’s also make sure that the microphones of the iPhone or iPad are working properly when we use them in the Voice Memos application or during a call, for example.
From there, we should try other options. The most immediate will be deactivate and reactivate the dictation function. To do this, we will follow these steps:
- We open the application Settings on our iPhone or iPad.
- We entered General.
- we touch Keyboard.
- We disable Enable dictation.
- We wait 10 seconds.
- We activate Enable dictation.
If the dictation feature still doesn’t work after doing this, it’s a good idea to let’s deactivate the languages we are not going to use. On the same settings page we are on, we tap on dictation languages and we disable those we consider.
There is the possibility that dictati on settings not showing
We continue. If dictation still doesn’t work, the best we can do is remove the keyboard we are using, then add it back. Don’t forget that we will Settings > General > Keyboard > keyboards. Another option, one of the last resorts, is to turn Siri off and on again. We do like this:
- We open the application Settings on our iPhone or iPad.
- We entered Siri and Search.
- We disable Activate when you hear “Hey Siri”.
- We disable By pressing the side button.
- We restart the iPhone or iPad.
- We activate both settings again.
From there we have to go to the most extensive resources. Assuming our iPhone or iPad is updated to the latest version of the operating system available, we can choose to reset the iPhone and, before restoring the backups, see that the dictation function is operational. We’ll do it this way because if it works on a clean install and stops working after restoring from backup, we’ll have to reset again and go with a setup like a new iPhone or iPad.
The final step is to contact Apple Support directly or make an appointment at an Apple Store so that they can, with specialized tools, discover the cause of the error. A very rare error, certainly, that we have in addition many resources to solve, but very uncomfortable. After all, is there anything more convenient than dictating text to our iPhone or iPad?
