Just a week ago, we echoed a new discovery from WaBetaInfo: newsletters were coming to WhatsApp. In principle, with some flavor to telegram channelsinstead of the typical newsletters that reach us via email.
We didn’t know at first how WhatsApp was going to implement this new feature, other than that it would live somewhere in the Status tab. Now we can see exactly what WhatsApp is planning in this regard, and the truth is that it takes some of the importance away from the states.
These will be the newsletters on WhatsApp
Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying to promote the uses of WhatsApp beyond chatting with friends and acquaintances. First came the communities and now the application plans to integrate a new type of communication, the latest newsletters.
According to WaBetaInfo, they will not be very different from Telegram or Instagram channels: they will be a means for an entity communicates with its followers private: neither the subscribers phone number will be visible to the newsletter owner nor the newsletter phone number will be visible to subscribers. Instead, a username will be used.
While we haven’t been able to see exactly what type of content these newsletters will be yet, whether they will be normal text chats or status-style content, one thing we are already clear on is the where they will be displayed: in the States tab
According to the latest screenshot from WaBetaInfo, the WhatsApp Status tab will completely change, showing the states as a horizontal line, as happens for example on Instagram. That is to say, they will lose some visibility, although in return WhatsApp has allowed us to see the statuses directly from the profile picture in the chat list for months.
This tab of States will be split into two and most of the area will go to the newsletter, which now we have an official text. “Stay up to date on the topics that matter to you. The newsletters you follow will appear here.” It also includes a button to search for newsletters (by username) and a + button, predictably to create your own.
After communities, newsletters within WhatsApp aim to become WhatsApp’s next big thing. Details about it are starting to trickle in, but it’s still impossible to predict when they’ll be available to users.
