Repairing the iPhone is generally not a friendly expense for our budget. Although Apple started offering self-service repair programs last year to make this increasingly accessible, there are still components that require a specialized process to return to their original state. From a video posted by YouTuber Spare Partsknown for creating his own iPhone in China, a new machine dedicated to OLED screen repairlike those used by Apple, modifies the process known so far.
The same laser to create and repair
In the video, you can see the YouTuber tour the workshop where one of the machines is in operation. The system is based on the use of a laser capable of repairing facial traces on OLED screens, without having to remove them.. As can be seen, the machine does not repair glass or flexible cables, so these components must be in good condition.
The traces it repairs are tiny paths that carry electrical signals across the screen. When these traces are damaged, visible lines or other display problems may appear on the screen. Precisely the same laser that is used in manufacturing is used to repair these troublesome lines.
The machine, which requires a manual operator, also stands out for its ability to repair the screen while it is still on. This allows the operator to visually follow the repair process and instantly recognize when the problem has been fixed as the change occurs immediately.
Another amazing feature is that the machine is equipped to adjust the screen flex. The cable, which is attached to the front of the screen, can be bent to the other side as needed.
However, while it’s a great fix for a specific type of problem that can probably save us money on future repairs, there are other problems it doesn’t fix like iPhone screens that are physically broken with cracks or scratches. The repair process only applies to the OLED panel below and is usually fused to the glass.
