2024 will be remembered as the year of the Xiaomi car. The brand, famous in Europe for its mobile phones, has decided to launch itself into the automotive sector, by designing an electric car from scratch. A risk that even Apple did not accept, but that Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, showed that it was worth it.
The success of the Xiaomi SU7 is already evident, after 100,000 units sold in China and with plans to produce another 30,000 units before the end of the year. A success which allowed Xiaomi to continue its expansion in the sector with new models; first with the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, a sporty version of the first model, then with a completely new second model.
We won't have to wait long to see this second Xiaomi model; Several Chinese media claim, based on internal company sources, that Xiaomi's first SUV will arrive in the first quarter of 2025. The new model, which is codenamed MX11 but could have a different commercial name, will be even more ambitious than the SU7; since its main rival will be a normally inaccessible brand: Ferrari.
This does not mean that the Xiaomi MX11 will be a racing coupe, quite the contrary: the MX11 will be a sporty SUVand everything indicates that the objective is to create a more affordable version of the Ferrari Purosangue, the Prancing Horse's first SUV launched two years ago, not without a little controversy. But the initial rejection from Ferrari fans was quickly lost as soon as they saw that the SUV adopts the same values of exclusivity and sportiness as the rest of the range. There's just one problem: the Ferrari Purosangue starts at 390,000 dollars, and even if we have that money, it's very likely we won't get any due to limited annual production.
This is where Xiaomi comes in; In the same way that the SU7 was created to offer the same thing as the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S at a much lower price, the MX11 was created to offer the same thing as the Ferrari Purosangue. Obviously, even Xiaomi can't compete with Ferrari in terms of luxury and sportiness (at least for now), but the MX11 seems to be a more practical and above all more economical solution.
The MX11 has already been on the roads, with camouflage that prevented its shape from being seen; but the little intuition indicates that it will have a sporty shape, with a lowered rear, instead of the boxy shapes more common in family SUVs. Also note that it will have the same headlights and taillights as the SU7, to continue the brand image. In one of the photos, Lei Jun himself appears testing the new car, and judging by his smile, it seems that he achieved what he wanted.
Based on this information, fans have created computer-rendered images that help us get an idea of what the new model will look like; although the final version may be very different.
Technically, the MX11 should be based on the same chassis as the SU7, although it is possible that it will debut with the new Xiaomi chassis presented recently. Given the popularity of SUVs and the more affordable price of this model compared to its competitors, it is very likely that we will face another bestseller.
