Google continues to shell out Android permissions in the latest Android 14 beta, following previous releases. This beta shows us Google’s intentions to give us control over something that was previously out of our hands: choosing whether an app can send us full-screen notifications oh no.
Not all notifications are equally important. Less important ones are muted, normal ones are shown as pop-ups, and more important ones are shown separately from the rest, sometimes as bubbles. Critical notifications appear full screen
Permission to notify in full screen
James Bond has a license to kill and Android apps until now had a license to notify fullscreen as standard because that’s one of those permissions that are granted automatically without user intervention. This changes with Android 14.
Android 13 introduced notification permission and in Android 14 it gets even finer to control the most intrusive of all notifications: those that are displayed. full screen, in addition to everything you were doing at this moment. This will be a special permission which, for now, is called “fullscreen intents”.
We can already test this authorization in the Android 14 beta, in the app settings > Apps with Special Permissions > Manage Fullscreen Intents. At first it seems to be active, but we will be able to deactivate it to prevent an application from interrupting us.
These types of notifications are common for critical situations such as an alarm or an incoming call, although there are cases in which we do not want to be interrupted even if they call us, without having to activate the do not disturb mode. This permission will allow us to do so in Android 14, if it’s still around when it officially launches. By disabling it, the notification will reach us normally, which is usually synonymous with a pop-up window.
