Tim Cook has signed an open letter on the occasion of the launch of the first issue of Login magazine, from the Corriere della Sera editorial group. A letter in which the boss of Apple reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, humanity and the environment.
“Technology is neither good nor bad in itself”
As collected in MacRumors, Tim Cook begins the letter by reminiscing about the first opening of an Apple Store in Italy. It was almost 40 years ago. “In the following decade, the introduction of the Macintosh computer and the birth of the Internet sparked a wave of innovation that would reshape humanity’s relationship with technologywhile the fall of the Berlin Wall has created unprecedented new opportunities for global collaboration.”
Apple’s CEO says we’re in a turning point in history. A time when, as the world emerges from a pandemic, we have “a unique opportunity to shape the future we want to live in”.
“The decisions we make today about how to rebuild and where to focus our resources will leave their mark for many decades to come. And while technology will clearly have a profound influence on the future we build, it is important to remember that technology is neither good nor bad in itself. Its impact will depend on the values and intentions we put at the center of our innovations.”
People can only benefit from the technology we create in an environment where humanity can thrive.
Below, Tim Cook reflects on Apple’s values and approach to leave the world better than how you found it. Something they achieve through innovation and putting people at the center of everything they do. From this comes the commitment to curb climate change, because, in Cook’s words, “we know that people can only benefit from the technology we create in an environment where humanity can thrive.”
“And that’s still why we fight with incredible vigor to protect our users’ fundamental right to privacy: because we see how damaging the consequences can be when someone’s personal data is exploited or tracked without consent.”
With a strong commitment to health
As Tim Cook has already commented on other occasions, the area of health will be the one that Apple will put the most forward in the future. We can check the steps of it on the Apple Watch, a device more and more focused on our health. The Apple CEO rightly mentions a recent email he received from a 29-year-old resident of Rome.
According to the executive, this person is being treated for a serious heart condition that was discovered through the irregular rhythm alert on his Apple Watch. This and many other similar stories remind us, according to Cook, “how big is the impact of technologyeven if it means saving lives, when, during its design, we put the human being at the center”.
Tim Cook takes a look at the Apple Developer Academy in Naples, where students can train in app development. Also review other programs that support young Italians actively participate in technology.
Finally, to close the letter, Tim Cook affirms that we are moving forward together in the technological revolution which, ever faster, is changing our lives. “At Apple, we will continue to be guided by our values as we we use technology to change the world for the better. I hope that innovators from all over Italy will want to join us in this challenge.”
