Nowadays, businesses know that cloud storage is a necessity. Emails, documents, photos… There are different services like iCloud or Google Drive. However, you almost certainly have a Gmail account. These accounts include 15GB of free storage. This storage is filled with both cloud files and your own daily emails.
This is why, after years and years of using a Gmail account, we can end up having a full inbox with no room for other emails. One solution would be to pay for Google One to get more storage. another is migrate emails from one account to another to have free space in your original email account.
Here’s how to free up storage space in a Gmail account
The first thing we recommend is to take a look at all the content you have in Google Drive. It could be anything from documents you shared at work that you no longer use, to old restaurant menus that were saved when you scanned the QR… Also, remember to empty the recycle bin to completely free up storage space from Google Drive. You can easily find all this on the Google Drive website and in the left column.

Move your emails from one Gmail account to another to free up storage space
Next, we explain a series of steps to save space on your Gmail account and avoid having to pay a subscription. We recommend doing this from a computer and Google Chrome. This can be on Mac and Windows.
In your main Gmail account
- Log in to your primary Gmail account.
- Tap the settings icon (gear) and select “See all settings”.
- Click “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” and then click “Enable POP for all messages.”
- Under “When messages are accessed via POP” you need to click the drop-down menu and choose “Delete Gmail copy”.
- Scroll down and save your changes.
- Click on this link and create a temporary password.
Once this is done, we will have prepared part of the migration. Now you will need a second Gmail account. You can create it for free or use another one that you already had before.
In your new Gmail account
- With your new Gmail inbox, navigate to “See all settings” again on the gear icon.
- Click on the “Accounts and Import” option.
- Click on “Add an email account”.
- In the pop-up window, enter your original Gmail email.
- Select the option “Import emails from my other account (POP3)”.
- Enter your temporary password and select port 995.
- Check the last 3 boxes and click “Add Account”.
This done, emails will start migrating from your original account to the new one. You can now delete any you don’t want from your main Gmail account to free up space. Also, remember to empty the trash to leave the 15GB of Gmail completely free.
