If you want to update your system automatically, macOS allows you to update your system from System Preferences, “Software Update” pane:
Once you open this panel, you will see the option ‘Keep your Mac updated automatically‘ downstairs :
If you enable it as you see in the screenshot above, your Mac will download all macOS updates in the background and notify you when the updates are ready. You will have the opportunity to do so at that time, but also the possibility of doing it the following night.
If you choose this option and leave the mac on when you go to bed, the next morning you will find it updated. This way you avoid having to wait the minutes the computer needs to apply the new version of the system at a time when you need to use it.
If, on the other hand, you want to update your Mac manually at some point, just open that same “Software Update” panel. Each time you do this, macOS checks for pending updates. If there is none, you will see the message “Your Mac is up to date” as shown in the screenshots above. If there is an update A button to download and update will appear on the right side of the panel. The download may have already taken place, in which case the button will say “Update now”.
