For a few months, the rumor ran the existence of a new top-of-the-range mobile phone from Google; the name was not decided, but we were talking about the Pixel 7 Ultra, an appropriate name for a mobile that was going to use materials never seen before in the range.

Now, in an unexpected twist, it turns out that the new mobile would actually be the Pixel 7awhich would change Google’s policy and become the most successful model in the current range.
The Pixel 7a would be the best Pixel
It was revealed in 9to5Google, where they connected the initial rumors with the latest leak of the next Google mobile. Since the beginning of the year, Google has been known to prepare five new hardware devices, their codenames appearing in the code of some Android applications.
Two of them that we already know, “Panther” and “Cheetah” are respectively Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, both launched a few weeks ago. The third, “Tango”, will be the Pixel tablet, which will have the honor of being the first 64-bit Android-only device. The fourth, “Felix”, will be the folding mobile which has not yet been announced.
That leaves just one codename, “Lynx,” and two phones, the Pixel 7 Ultra and Pixel 7a; so logically they are the same device. Everything fits, since the leaked technical characteristics coincide between “Lynx” and what journalists discovered on the Pixel 7a.
The Pixel tablet will use ceramic materials, like the Pixel 7a
The new mobile will use the same Tensor G2 processor as the current Pixel 7, but it will have some differences, especially in manufacturing, thanks to the use of high-end materials. Specifically, it would be the first Pixel to be ceramic, since until now all devices used plastic, glass or metal. That’s not really surprising, as Google has already confirmed that the Pixel Tablet will use a nano-ceramic lid on an aluminum chassis.
What is surprising, at least for a Pixel A series mobile, is that the cameras will be the new benchmark in Google mobile. It will have the same Samsung GN1 sensor used since the Pixel 6 but in addition, it will be accompanied by a 64 Mpx Sony IMX 787 for the telephoto lens and a 13 Mpx Sony IMX 712 for the wide angle. It is something that we have never seen in a mobile of this type, since only the Pro models have received the telephoto lens; not only that, but in theory the telephoto lens would be even better than the Pixel 7 Pro, a 48MP Samsung GM5. Another improvement over previous models is wireless charging, although it’s reportedly only 5W.

Although the Pixel A range is currently associated with cheaper models based on the main model (like the Pixel 6a or the Pixel Buds A), in reality it is traditionally an evolution with improvements. For example, the Pixel 5a introduced water resistance and materials like metal over the regular Pixel 5, and the Pixel 4a got the next-gen processor.
