watchOS 11 nap

We continue to discover the features of the updates that Apple presented during the last WWDC 2024 and which it did not comment on during the developers event, and one of them that we have been waiting for since a long time : automatic sleep detection.

Sleep monitoring has been a feature of the Apple Watch for some time now. It started as a fairly rudimentary feature that offers very little data beyond sleep time, but little by little it has become more important until today it offers us much more data about our sleep, in addition to measuring during this phase. other highly relevant data such as heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and temperature. But for all this to work, we need to enable sleep mode on our watch.

However, one detail that Apple didn’t mention during the last watchOS 11 presentation is that now this sleep monitoring feature can automatically detect when you’re taking a nap. As you can see in the sleep graph image, you can see the night time period on the left, but after we see a bar on the right it’s an afternoon nap. It does not offer as detailed information as that of the nighttime period, but to quantify total sleep for the day, the two periods are counted together.

Since Apple included sleep mode in iOS and watchOS, I use it daily, not only to know the data, but also because It also includes a Do Not Disturb mode and alarm., with the possibility of personalizing different alarm clocks depending on the day. It’s something that works automatically, detecting when you’re going to sleep, but it requires that sleep mode to be active in order to work. With this feature, those occasional naps that we sometimes have the luxury of being able to enjoy will now also be included.
