we arrived with a -3% battery

It’s rare that someone doesn’t tell me about the range problem of electric cars when I tell them that I normally drive such a vehicle. I already explained here what it means to travel in a medium or short range car like the Dacia Spring, so I wanted to do the same test in a Tesla Model Y.

Taking into account that people look at these types of cars as if they had to stop every 30 minutes to fill up and stay there for an hour, I wanted to do something a little risky, go on a trip without recharging the car to 100%.

As I say in the video, the vehicle had less than 65% battery when leaving, and it was said that we wouldn’t reach the destination.

You have to plan, but don’t go crazy

We always say that to travel in an electric car you have to plan more than when you go in a thermal car. And that’s true. Place.

But it’s also true that it doesn’t mean having to obsess over chargers, miles, or stops. In the example in this article, I did what is my longest annual trip, about 250km one way, as many back and a few more in between.

I know that each person is different and that there are people who do more km daily for their work, but it is not normal.

I invite you to watch the video, but if you don’t feel like it, I summarize my experience here:

  • The range depends a lot on the speed at which you ride, you can increase the range by descending 5 or 10 km/h.
  • There is a big difference between driving at 105 or 110 km/h and driving at 120 km/h. To go further, besides being illegal, is to cause the battery to drain faster than necessary.
  • Slopes and wind significantly alter energy consumption.
  • You’ll rarely have to fill the battery from 0-100%, so the wait won’t be as long as you think.
  • You shouldn’t spend many hours behind the wheel without resting, whether you’re driving a gas-powered or electric car.
  • Although there are many electric charger companies, Tesla super chargers are the most reliable.
  • At all times we had air conditioning, no kidding, I was going to consider turning it off to save battery life.

Tesla Model Y

As you can see, it is possible to use a car of this type for travel, although in some cases, of course, it will be more inconvenient than doing it in a combustion car.
