We’ve heard for years that Apple is working on a large-screen foldable device that’s more likely an iPad than an iPhone. And now a new report sheds new light on the project, which could arrive in 2026.
According to an article published on Medium by Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to release a large-screen foldable MacBook by 2026. This is a slightly more aggressive timeline than previously discussed and could represent an acceleration of the project. Kuo says Apple “aims to make the panel as wrinkle-free as possible, which requires high design specifications for both the panel and the hinge,” which cost around $900 for both parts.
Kuo says Apple is considering a foldable MacBook with a 20.25-inch or 18.8-inch screen, which would match the closed size of Apple’s current 14- to 15-inch and 13- to 14-inch laptops, respectively. On
According to Kuo, the laptop will use Apple’s M5 chip, which is expected to be released in the second half of 2026.
In case you haven’t already guessed, Kuo says the foldable MacBook is “likely to be expensive” and that the nomenclature “could approach that of the current Vision Pro.” Apple currently sells a 16-inch MacBook Pro starting at $3,499, but it has a top-end M3 Max processor, 36GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Based on Kuo’s explanation, a foldable MacBook would significantly lower the specs for a similar price.
However, Apple’s first foldable device will likely be a bigger success than Vision Pro, with Kuo estimating there will be over a million units by 2026.
