Learn about the iPhone’s Emergency SOS feature that saved this snowboarder’s life.
the British snowboarder Tim Blakely survived to an almost fatal event thanks to the emergency SOS function from the iPhone. This man not only saved his life, but also shared his story for others to learn from. After recounting the events, it became clear that Apple technology was a decisive element in the happy ending.
This regular snowboarder had a near-death experience as he walked alone on a glacier around Zermatt in Switzerland. On the descent, at approximately 10,000 feet, fell into a crack which remained hidden in the snow until this moment and remained there for 45 minutes.
Through an ice bridge his fall was no deeper and from there was able to maneuver the iPhone that I had on hand. In this way, Tim was able to return to London virtually unscathed and with much to contribute to others.
Emergency SOS function and 5-click trick
While he was there and given the fragility of the site, he only had the opportunity to do the right gestures to ask for help. He managed to see that his battery was at 3% and time would be decisive. It was then that he remembered that the iPhone had an emergency SOS and could call emergency services or send text messages with iPhone location.
The feature that saved Tim from a nightmare is, perhaps, one of the least known because few will want to know. However, this discreet option on the iPhone will come to your aid in a situation where you could be in danger.
This function can be activated by hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the SOS emergency slider appears. Then you just have to drag the slider to call for help.
If you cannot see or use the device screen, click the power button five times. This last the procedure is completely automatic and allows a short countdown before making the call, and in case it is activated by mistake.
With either of these two ways, location will be sent from where the mobile is automatically to help services. In the event of a change of location, an update will be sent to your emergency contacts and you will receive a notification after 10 minutes.
A more aware and grateful snowboarder with the iPhone
After this experience and this deep reflection, Tim decided to share the details in their social networks and educate others so as not to tempt fate or practice activities of this type alone.
As well thanked Apple to add a useful function to the iPhone and with a convenient activation mechanism, thanks to which he was able to alert rescuers and with a minimum of battery. “Thank you Apple, your side button in 5 clicks for emergency services, it’s especially good when the screen is constantly dripping”were his words.
Likewise, he said that after analyzing what had happened, the first step would be to raise awareness about the incredible work mountain rescuers do and educating others so they aren’t as careless as he was.
Moreover, he pointed out that I will continue to snowboard in the company of someone else and will take the time to be well informed about the off-piste areas of the resorts, before going through them. “I was attracted by a false sense of security which also led me to be very euphoric about looking for areas to ski” and added that no matter how experienced anyone might think he was, because “This is not a joke” Nor is it a matter of luck.
