The design appears while maintaining the context
Although many technofiles attract attention, many users purchase mobile phones. Details are important, but so are aesthetics.
Samsung managed to create a a truly spectacular line of sight and design on the Galaxy S, by 2020 we reached the point of curiosity. On the one hand, the language comes with details such as the position of the front camera, something we saw in the last Note and in the Galaxy A. But on the other hand the very different features of these models are a little lost: the curvature of the screens.
Not that this erosion has completely disappeared, but it is quite surprising that by the time the industry gets closer to water-screen screens, with curves around 90 degrees, Samsung is returning to its origins.
None of the three models have curvature capped and although the panels are slightly leaning on the sides it has nothing to do with the Galaxy S6 or S7, but with the S9 or S10. This is something that will affect us greatly in dividing the screen screens.
In the background we also have news that that camera module is being moved to another to give it a more similar appearance to the new Samsung. In the S20 and S20 Plus we don't see much difference with the current Global A, but the S20 Ultra represents many things. Starting the camera module is great, and it goes through a lot. It is so large that it is not uncommon to support an index in that area. Another impressive feature is screen printing that shows it has a 100X zoom.
As expected, we don't have a port for connecting headphones, only one charge, which can also be used with headphones but those that use a USB C connector.
Although we could not test it extensively we should highlight two speakers with all of these types, one in the frame below and the other in the previous one. It is appreciated that Samsung continues to pay attention to this type of data, especially at higher frequencies.
As for ergonomics, we have to make a difference. The S20 and S20 Plus are mobile phones, with smaller edges and more controlled weight. Having them in hand is fun. The problem, at least for me, is the S20 Ultra. Its weight is too high and, though not too big, it gives it the opposite feeling. And the camera module doesn't help. This may not be a problem for many, but if anyone asked me if it would be a problem, I would tell them to see the phone before buying it, pick it up and play it.
Absolute power in all respects
In the operating phase we cannot say how the experience is completely automated because it is forbidden to install any external application on test mobile phones. Not just benchmark tests, but games or other apps.
However, the feeling they gave us is so good. And I mention this where they complained that Android 10 on the Galaxy A51 was not going as well as it should. In S20 it was not a problem or with a high resolution on your screen.
It is noteworthy that RAM uses LPDRR5 technology, that the memory is UFS 3.1 and that the processor, Exynos 990, fits well. In addition, even though the S20 Ultra only has 16 GB of RAM in some versions, the figures don't seem too short for any model, and they can all be integrated with microSD up to 1 TB.
As we were expecting, these are four mobile homes fingerprint sensor at the bottom of the screen, even though we've been asked not to use it, so we don't know how fast. They also have NFC.
The three models will be sold in the 5G version, although two smaller ones, the S20 and the S20 Plus, will have 4G. According to Samsung, 5G mobile sales will increase from 1% in 2019 to 18% in 2020.
It's probably the best screen on the market
There are cheaper products than Samsung, some with more software and some with riskier designs. But not one has better screens. It is at this stage that the Galaxy S20 is very bright.
All three models have the same panel type, though each has different characteristics.
As we saw in other models, the Galaxy S20 uses an OLED panel with much higher brightness, even though it didn't give us the statistics for the nits. Large resolution is 3400 x 1080 px, or if we want to use the star function, the refresh rate of 120 Hz, should decrease to FHD +.
The reason for this restriction is to make the battery unusable faster. The use of high resolution makes the power consumption too high. An increase in the refresh rate does the same. Samsung doesn't want the battery to be a problem and limits this to software.
As far as the screen experience should say that, without hesitation, 120 Hz is detectable. I'm not sure if it is competitive to work on them in any case and I would prefer that the One UI 2 have the program choice to work at 120 Hz or not depending on what we do, as Huawei does with the screen resolution.
But without a doubt we are facing the best calls in the market. In a few months more will come, and maybe some will overcome this, but for now it is not.
Big batteries, especially on the S20 Ultra
Not long ago manufacturers struggled to offer smaller margins in the market. That was detrimental to autonomy and users made it clear: we prefer large batteries for large-scale power outages.
Samsung has taken the floor and used three batteries of more than one size for this species. S20 uses 4000 mAh, S20 Plus 4500 mAh and S20 Ultra 5000 mAh.
On paper there is a clear commitment to the battery, but we are not sure about it. As we mentioned, we were not able to fully evaluate these mobiles but in the final analysis of the Samsung terminals I was able to do that I realized that at high amperage prices what we are achieving is the normal private. And while it's not ideal, it can be enough.
Personally I fear the use of 120 Hz on the screens of these phones for that reason. If Samsung has been able to use a 2K solution with that amount of refresh it is something, and I'm afraid that in the S20 the 4000 mAh won't be enough to withstand any use. Besides, the fact that amperages are very high is appreciated.
In addition, Samsung has implemented better fast charging with speeds of up to 45 W and wireless charging.
The photography commitment is clear
Samsung has, for a long time, been a reference within Android when announcing the animation category. In recent years not only have their phones stopped making great photos, but they have lost a considerable distance from the competition. Products like OPPO or Huawei have already invested a lot in that category, and it's obvious.
Now the Korean company is at the table again, greatly improving its cameras. This is particularly noteworthy on the S20 Ultra, which not only has a 108 Mpx main sensor, but a 40 Mpx front sensor that lets you use Pixel Binning to improve images at low light. And the 108 Mpx sensor will be the first to be able to make Pixel Binning not 4 pixels in 1, but 9 in 1.
Samsung improves nighttime photography, movement and zoom
Samsung focuses on developing night-time photography, photography, and advanced zoom quality. And precisely the zoom is what most of the articles are available for, especially the telephone Zoom in Space, a hybrid zoom made using good zoom, digital zoom and artificial intelligence to take the edge off a humorous border.
We have been able to test three models in this category and the feeling he has given us that Samsung is finally reaching its exact competitors. 100x is useless, I'm just upgrading it, passing by to see the remote signal.
However, zoom use between 5 and 10 increase in S20 Ultra and 3 increase in S20 and S20 Plus is highly resolved. The stability is quite impressive and the results are excellent, at least in the short test I can do.
The angle is wide and works well, although here I would deal with Samsung which did not select the sensors with more adjustment because the 12-speed Impx has been down to other models, and it doesn't seem like this will be the case.
Special meaning of Take Quick a function within the camera system that lets you create multiple videos and images that are automatically saved on a single machine. What is this done for? Ask anyone with a small child or pet. If the software is working well the fact that the usage will be numerous.
Finally, say that the three S20s are able to record 8K video and stream it on compatible Samsung TVs. We can also take 33 Mpx images for a specific frame.
The latest software, with some error
These three models will reach the market with Android 10, either way. Enjoy the latest version of One UI, 2, with many features introduced, such as black mode, automatic light change, multiple customization options, theme apps …
But there's also a catch, which we've already mentioned in the Samsung Galaxy A51 analysis. Pre-installed applications, those of Facebook but those of Microsoft, cannot be excluded. We can disable them, but not remove them completely. It seems to me an act of improvement on the part of Samsung, especially in the travel sector.
The system brightness didn't give us a problem, and the touch is applied calmly, now integrated with that of Android 10.
Like the special job we have Google Duo integration within the phone app, which makes it very easy to start a video call with any communication on our agenda.
The Green S20 is a show of strength
Samsung needs to be taken back to their senior level and counted. The S20s are better for battery, photos, design, display, performance and connectivity. The S20 Ultra is a great example of this. Of course there are features that surpass other models in a couple of months, but we don't see them being defeated at all in the short term.
Of course, the prices of these models are not cheap and less than the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite suggests that perhaps for most users either a 500 or 600 euros is enough even if you are looking for a higher range.
That said, if what we are looking for can have the best Android experience in the parts mentioned, of course, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is a compelling example to consider.
The three models will go on sale on March 13 in Spain.
