we tested the Teufel Boomster portable speaker

At first, I thought the Teufel Boomster relied on its “retro”-inspired design, which has been very fashionable lately, to attract potential customers; and while that’s true, I learned over time that wasn’t his only asset.

Classic on the outside, modern on the inside

Let appearances not deceive. That antenna that looks like it’s taken from the radio you used in your youth to catch the latest radio hits doesn’t faze you. This is a current portable speaker, not much different from other alternatives when it comes to technology and sound; and that is praise.

I think the Teufel Boomster is meant to be the modernized portable radio. And I say radio, because this device is capable of Pick up FM and DAB signal, so you can listen to the same stations as usual; hence the integrated antenna, which is not decoration but perfectly functional. But this is only the beginning.

It is also a Bluetooth speaker, therefore compatible with all your smartphones and other devices using the wireless standard. When we start the pairing it appears like any speaker and just press to pair the two devices and the mobile sound comes out of the speakers.

The big problem with Bluetooth is the loss of sound quality it causes; Fortunately, the Boomster is compatible with the Qualcomm aptX codec for high definition audio, which is activated by default if our mobile is compatible. I’m really happy to see this technology in more and more devices, because so far I’ve only seen it in wireless headphones aimed at audiophiles. It’s thanks to this improved quality that the speaker can really perform at its best, but more on that later.

First I have to finish with the connections, and I’m left with the most basic of them all: an auxiliary audio input, which allows us to connect other media devices to stream through the Boomster’s speakers. This is a welcome addition as many manufacturers are already eliminating it. There are also two USB ports, but neither is for playing from another device, but for charging and updating the Boomster.

Classic, easy-to-use design

Using these modes is easy and all you need to do is press a button to switch between them. It is one of those products that can be used without having to consult the instruction manual, because everything is very direct and simple, despite the internal complexity that the support of different standards and technologies must have involved. In this sense, it is also similar to a classic portable speaker.

That the design is beautiful is not something I have to tell you, it shows in the pictures. Instead of directly copying the look of classic radios, Teufel has adapted to modern times, with a very attractive minimalism; especially in the white color of the device that I was able to test, although it is also available in black.

Curiously, the detail that I liked the most was the Teufel logo, which has that “roundness” typical of brands from the middle of the last century, which makes it stand out a lot on the loudspeaker grille, giving it its own touch. .

But this is not a classic radio. It is a portable speaker and as such, it is protected so that it can be taken away without fear, with IPX5 waterproof certification; therefore, it is recommended to take it to the swimming pool, for example, where it can withstand the occasional splash. An interesting detail is that the edges of the speaker are actually made of soft plastic, which should help absorb accidental bumps during transport.

To emphasize that it is a portable speaker, we have a handle on the top, which gives a lot of security due to its solidity. However, it is a relatively heavy device at 3.75 kilograms, so carrying it with one hand for a while is annoying.

The weight is explained by the internal batteries of this device, which allow it to last up to 18 hours of continuous playback, as long as it is at an adequate volume. In practice, this means you can use it all day without issue, so I think that justifies the heavier weight of this device.

Clear and quality sound

The sound is the aspect that surprised me the most about the Teufel Boomster, perhaps because my expectations were somewhat low; I thought it was a product that relied more on aesthetics than functionality, but I was very wrong.

I liked the sound of the Teufel Boomster much more than I expected, especially for its clarity and sharpness. the System 2.1 the Boomster is based on two tweeters, two midrange speakers and a forward-facing subwoofer; all this achieves a great balance between the different ranges of sound.

I liked the treble processing, as it’s usually the range that suffers the most when talking about “party” speakers, but in this case I was able to enjoy music of all kinds of genres without a problem. .

The bass is well represented, of course, but not to the extreme; in fact, depending on your taste, the sound may lack ‘punch’. Luckily we have a bass boost button in six tiers, and personally I think the first tier strikes a very good balance and that’s where I would stop.

What I would criticize the most about this speaker is that it only really sounds good when we crank up the volume; at low levels, it’s as if all that balance is lost. But as you increase it, you find how parts of the sound range start to appear.

Exactly, where you won’t have to complain is in the volume; this speaker is capable of sounding very loud, and the best thing is that the balance is largely maintained until the highest levels, where obviously the details are lost.

The Teufer Boomster surprised me with what it’s capable of behind its very understated appearance; You really wouldn’t expect the volume level and sound quality it is capable of with its design. The inclusion of new mobile audio technologies helps a lot.

Although the weight is high for its size, it is more than compensated by the duration of the batteries. It should also be noted that Teufel has not abandoned traditional radio enthusiasts, at the same time it supports the aptX codec for better sound quality through our mobile.
