We’ve been asking for laptop screens like cell phones for years, and they’re finally here

If Samsung knows anything, it’s how to create the best screens in the mobile industry. The AMOLED panels used by the Galaxy range are simply the best on the market, and it is not surprising that the manufacturer supplies them to competitors such as Apple or Xiaomi (since Samsung Display is a separate company from Samsung mobiles).

On the other hand, in the IT sector, we have spent years at two candles, supporting LCD technology despite the fact that the difference was obvious to everyone; To make matters worse, the move to touch-based interfaces had terrible results, as anyone who’s used a “two-in-one” or tablet with Windows knows. Little by little things are changing, and manufacturers like Asus have started to bet on OLED screens on their devices; but they were still not at the same level as those of smartphones.

OLED screens for laptops like cell phones

This week, Samsung Display took the step we’ve all been waiting for: it announced the production of OLED panels designed for laptops that will be based on the same technologies used in mobile phones.

This will result in much thinner and lighter laptop screens that deliver spectacular image quality while maintaining touchscreen capabilities that work as well as a smartphone. And that’s no exaggeration: it’s that they will be based on the same concept.

Until now, laptop touchscreens have used an adhesive film with built-in touch sensors, which results in a greater thickness, but gives the manufacturer the possibility of offering a cheaper version without touch functions. Instead, mobile touchscreens work differently, with sensors built right into the panel.

The new panel presented by Samsung Display works like this, integrating touch technology. The obvious advantage will be in the thickness, which will be reduced between 6% and 11% relative to other panels; this should translate to thinner screens on our laptops. But also, this solution is simpler and this will result in less weight and will even have environmental consequences by facilitating recycling.

To all this must be added the image quality that these panels will offer, although the more technical details have not been confirmed. The OLED panel featured in the ad is 16-inches in size, so we can expect laptops with larger screens but do not occupy more sizeeither thanks to the reduced size of the edges and the fewer number of internal components. What’s clear is that it will support 120Hz refresh rates, adding to the big advantage of OLEDs: the reduced response time, ideal for gamers.

Samsung Display’s new OLED panels will debut at new Galaxy Book range from Samsung, which will be presented with the Galaxy S23, but we hope to see them on laptops from other customer brands.
