Rumors suggest that Apple is developing new screens. Screens which apparently will not be fitted to any product, but are developed as external monitors. With this we could see the return of one of the most popular monitors for Apple users: the Thunderbolt Display.
A monitor in two sizes and technologies and a new Pro Display XDR
According to @dylandkt post On Twitter, Apple will work on three new stand-alone displays in cooperation with LG. Korean society would develop three monitors of interesting sizes: 24 inches, like the current iMac, 27 inches, like the expected future iMac Pro and 32 inches, which we could well see arriving in the form of Pro Display XDR.
Remember, years ago, Apple sold its own Thunderbolt display. A screen very similar to an iMac that could be used with any computer. Later, this screen was removed from the catalog and third-party alternatives were offered, including from the LG brand. After some time, alongside the launch of the modular Mac Pro, Apple introduced the Pro Display XDR, a display aimed at the professional sector which, due to its price, left a void for Apple users who wanted a branded display without paying the price of a professional screen.
An ideal monitor for a Mac mini or to place next to our iMac.
For several months, we have seen a signal, still very weak, from an independent monitor manufactured by Apple which come replace the abandoned Thunderbolt screen. And this is where the rumors posted by @dylandkt fit in, claiming that LG is working on screens, still in the early stages of development, mounted on chassis without any branding.
“There are three screens manufactured by LG packaged in an unbranded chassis for use as external monitors that are under development. Two of them have the same specifications as the upcoming 27-inch and 24-inch iMac displays. Another screen appears to be an upgraded 32-inch Pro XDR display. Despite the lack of branding, we can at least assume that this display will be Apple-branded. “
Apparently the 27 and 32 inch screens would be made in mini-LED backlight technology and would take advantage of 120Hz refresh rate, which brings us straight to the ProMotion we already know from the 14in and 16in MacBook Pros. At the same time, it is claimed that the 32-inch screen has some sort of Apple silicon chip.
While it is true that one might think that LG is working on the future screen of the current 24-inch iMac, on the screen of the new iMac 27 and on a variant of the Pro Display XDR, it seems that in the end we would see independent controllers. Mark Gurman himself first told us about it earlier this year: a consumer grade monitor at a much lower price point than the $ 5,000 Pro Display.
However, it looks like we could be in front of a monitor that would be offered in two sizes and technologies: 24-inch LCD and 27-inch mini-LED as well as a possible renewal of the more powerful Pro Display XDR thanks to its own processor. We’ll see if, over the weeks, we can learn more about these long-awaited monitors.
