We usually think of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay as the two car operating systems capable of bring phone apps to vehicle console, but these are not the only options: in addition to the systems specific to each manufacturer, the Faurecia Aptoide consortium stands up to giants like Google. And it is based on Android.
High technology has come to flood every scene of our lives, from the interior of our homes to cars. Increasingly large screens share the spotlight with steering wheel controls, odometer and other dashboard features; some screens that need content beyond the indicators necessary to drive in the most comfortable way possible. And what better way to add enhancements than by installing apps? In this area there is a real war of companies.
An infotainment system that allows the installation of Android applications
The field of mobility is a field fertilized by the user data that all the companies linked to them try to collect. Google is one of the most interested, not in vain Android Auto is an important real-time information channel for applications such as Google Maps or Waze. The data on traffic jams, accidents and slowdowns on the road they have enormous value; as well as various related information, such as user activity and apps used while driving.
Car manufacturers have their own vehicle management systems; to which they add standardized solutions in order to offer greater value to the user. Android Auto is one of the most popular platforms, Apple CarPlay is its most famous competitor. And Faurecia Aptoide has been talking a lot lately, especially in the field of agreements with major automotive brands.
As we learned recently, Mercedes Benz has reached an agreement with Faurecia Aptoide to put its infotainment system o infotainment (infotainment jerk) to their vehicles. According to Reuters, this agreement would have been concluded at the expense of Android Auto, which would have been left out. Apart from Mercedes Benz, Faurecia Aptoide provides its system to other brands such as BMW and Volkswagen
Generally speaking, Faurecia Aptoide offers a complete vehicle information and entertainment solution, since it not only provides access to basic traffic tools, it also allows the user to installation of Android applications to make travel more bearable. This opens the door to apps for themed maps, music, messaging and more: Aptoide currently has a catalog of around 250 specially supervised apps for in-car use.
The controversial Aptoide as an Android app store for cars
It seems odd that Aptoide, an Android app portal distributed from outside Google Play through APKs, can support vehicles of Mercedes Benz’s stature, but that’s how it is: the store maintains a line of software developed specifically for cars and taking into account the needs of these devices
Faurecia Aptoide is preloaded in approved vehicles to access car screen content, as well as GPS navigation applications, etc. For such access, a Aptoide store adapted to the car console; which provides access to apps exclusively approved for use while driving.
According to Faurecia Aptoide:
“New apps and updates will go through our validation process, ensuring they meet automotive quality standards and provide a seamless user experience.“.
Faurecia Aptoide is based on Android Automotive OS. This is integrated into the vehicle; it is therefore not necessary to connect the mobile to project its screen on the car (this is what Android Auto does). One of its greatest advantages is that of be free from Google software; so each brand can offer its own services: account, support, activity, everything you need. And without forgetting the apps with which to make the car smarter: just install the APKs accessible from the integrated Aptoide store.
