Even though there are still plenty of iOS 15 features to release, Private Relay was one of the first to arrive. This function is responsible for creating a privacy layer in your iPhone’s internet services. This means that neither mobile operators, nor your Internet service provider, nor Apple itself will be able to access your Internet browsing data, your online identity or the pages you access.

It is normal that when we browse the internet we leave our trail wherever we enter, this is due to DNS records and our IP address. Of course, our Internet provider can access this data without any problems, and not only them. The pages we access can also store this data thanks to the famous Internet cookies, and although they may not in all cases know your physical identity, they can create a profile from the data collected.

How does Private Relay work on our iPhone or iPad

That’s why Apple created Private Relay for its devices. On their official website, those of Cupertino briefly explain to us how they manage to encrypt our browsing data so that no one can access it:

By enabling private relay, your requests are sent over two separate secure internet paths. Your IP address is only visible to your network provider and the first Apple relay. Your DNS records are encrypted so that no one else can see the address of the website you are trying to visit.

But the process does not stop there, and it is that Apple has created a series of steps that will allow us to remain anonymous completely on the Internet, as they tell us here:

On the second relay, by another content provider, a temporary IP address is generated, the name of the site you requested to view is decrypted, and you connect to the site. All of this is done in accordance with the latest Internet standards to maintain a high-performance browsing experience while protecting your privacy.

What sites do not work with Private Relay

Of course, it is normal that you wonder if this function is compatible with absolutely all the Internet sites which you visit daily. Although Private Relay is designed to protect your internet privacy at all times without affecting your web experience, yes it is possible that you will find sites requiring access to certain data. Among these data we have the IP address or your browsing activity.

Apple explains on its website that Private Relay may not be compatible or bring anomalies to your navigation on the following types of sites:

1. the commercial or educational web pages and services that require your browsing history, parental controls, or essential services that do not impact data usage may not be compatible with Private Relay.
2. It is possible that some websites show content for the wrong region, or that require additional steps to give you access. This issue will be fixed when websites update their settings to support Private Relay.
3. May be not all countries support private relay. If you travel to an area where private relay is not supported, the feature will be automatically disabled. However, Private Relay will notify you when it is turned off and on again.

How to Activate Private Relay on iPhone or iPad

Now that you know what Private Relay is, how it works, and what its pros and cons are, you’re probably wondering. how you can activate it on your iPhone or iPad. Well, the answer is very simple, although you must have an iCloud+ subscription.

iCloud+ includes the features of Private Relay, secure video on HomeKit, hide your emails on the Internet, family sharing, and 50 GB iCloud storage. This last section can be upgraded to a 2TB cloud storage plan. The basic plan which includes the 50GB costs US$0.99.

If you already have an iCloud+ subscription, follow these steps:

1. Enter the menu Settings from your iPhone or iPad.
2. click on [tu nombre].
3. Here enter the option ‘iCloud‘.
4. Find and tap Private Cast.
5. If you have an iCloud+ subscription, just turn on the switch next to ‘Private streaming (beta)‘. If you do not have one, the application itself will offer you to buy it immediately.
