How often do you change your mobile phone? Many people put up with their phone for some years but we realize there are many other users who can stay with the same smartphone for a long time, to the extent of changing terminals from year to year and several times in the same year.
When we buy a cell phone we do so because it covers our basic needs or because it has a specific feature or function that is important to us. So for example if we want a 5G phone with 12 GB of RAM we can make an example with the Samsung Galaxy S20 and if the bottom line is to make really good images then we have to choose the Huawei P40 Pro, always according to DXOMARK. I mean that as a general rule we always want the best and the present.
The problem is that the good is temporary. Technology is moving ahead with connectivity and boundaries and what is now the most recent market in a few months may be outdated. And then we want the best again. Our mobile device we were excited about a few months ago no longer wants to look for another. We call this the WOW effect and it is more dangerous than it looks..
What is the effect of WOW: when you get tired of your next-generation phone
Many of you will call it "first world problems" or it will seem silly to you but it is more common than it might seem at first. Continuous purchases that are subject to us daily it keeps us always looking to buy and buy new technological devices.
Let's take an example. We have the best mobile phone, it works well, it has a good camera and we get regular updates. Now, the X brand is launching an app that allows recording with 8K resolution and we can just say: WOW! We want that mobile phone! But make sure we compare it again in a few months that effect of WOW will be gone and we would have seen that spending over 1,000 euros to upgrade our old working smartphone was not worth it. And when we say 8K we're talking about any other innovations.
The company's marketing has great potential and its purpose is to create the demand that it wants to have this last phone for sale now. The WOW effect is similar to this and is something we need to be aware of. In view of this we have to ask ourselves the following:
- How long have we had our smartphone?
- Is our phone still active? Does the battery last? Is it still being updated? How long would it take me?
- Do I need that new feature already introduced by X Brand?
- Is it worth paying that money to refresh my smartphone?
- Do I regret spending my money on a new phone?
It doesn't matter that in the end everyone does what they want with their money, it's worth thinking before taking action. Just remember that despite the fact that today mobile can be the best in the market, tomorrow may be too late. So, we have to be responsible for the purchases we make and most of all, we are very careful with the effect of WOW.
