What is Time Machine and how to use it to protect the data of our Macs

data, machine, Macs, protect, time

Time Machine is the Mac’s backup system. A system with which we can back up all the information on our computer in an incremental and orderly way so that we can recover it both after deleting a specific file and when we migrate the information to a new Mac, to name just two examples.

The Time Machine system is supported by external storage that we can connect to our Mac both via cable and Wi-Fi network. After monitoring and saving the changes made to the file system of the Mac, Time Machine s takes care of transfer them to these warehouses to keep them safe.

A copy that we do not even realize

The truth is that Time Machine is a really, really simple system. Once activated, our Mac takes care of everything. Setting up Time Machine is super easy, in addition. All we have to do is connect external storage to the Mac (it can be a network drive), then press System Preferences from the Apple () menu and enter Time Machine.

Once here, we just do click on Select backup disk we choose the disk that we have connected and There you go. That’s all. From there, our Mac will internally save a copy of all changes made to all files on the computer. It will then transfer this information to external storage at certain agreed times if it is a network volume or wait for us to connect external storage to do the same.

From System Preferences we can activate, if we wish, Show Time Machine in menu bar. With this we will have a small menu always visible in the top bar for check backup processif there is one in progress, or request that it be carried out before, for example, an installation or a major modification of the system.

Time Machine enabled, whether we decide to see the menu or not, all we have to do is wait for the first copy to finish. Keep in mind that depending on the speed of the storage we have connected and the amount of information on our computer, this first copy can take a long time. The good thing is that we can continue to use the Mac as we normally would, so we just have to let the process complete.

I disabled Time Machine years ago. This is now my backup system

And this taking into account that subsequent copies will be much faster. So much so that on many occasions, once we get into the habit of regularly connecting external storage, we will forget that the Time Machine system is running. In the end, that’s the goal, that we forget to make copies knowing that, if we need them, they will be there.
