Seven years ago, WhatsApp introduced calls to cell phones so users didn’t have to leave their app to speak by voice, but it took all those years for the voice calls switch to smartwatches.
WhatsApp has added support for voice calls in Wear OS 3the latest version of Google’s operating system for smartwatches and which is currently only present in the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 watches and in the new Galaxy Watch5 and Montblanc Summit 3.
WhatsApp and your voice calls on Wear OS 3
WhatsApp calls came to Wear OS 3 by surprise, thanks to the latest beta of the candidacy. Users of a compatible watch have found they can answer WhatsApp voice calls from your own watch.
In previous versions of Wear OS, and depending on the watch and the linked mobile, WhatsApp calls either did not come into the watch, or if the watch notified you that they were calling you on WhatsApp, you could accept or reject the call from your wrist, but if you accepted the call, you had to pick up the mobile to talk and listen.
With WhatsApp Beta this has changed, and in addition to notifying you on your watch that you have an incoming call, it allows you to answer said call directly from the watch, thus eliminating this dependency on answering WhatsApp calls from your mobile.
In the current beta version, and depending on the linked mobile, Wear OS could indicate on the screen that it is a WhatsApp call by displaying the logo of the application or by showing nothing, whatever the call could pass for a normal call.
