Which charger do I need for my MacBook

Do you need to replace your MacBook charger? You should know that they are not all the same, because depending on the year of manufacture of your MacBook, it may have one amperage or another, as well as a different type of connector. Here we show you what you need to know when you need to buy a new adapter for your MacBook.

If you find it necessary to buy a new charger for your MacBook, MacBook Air, or Macbook Pro because it has been damaged or lost, it is important that you find the right one for your equipment.

We show you how to know how to identify it to avoid errors, because there are an infinite number of modalities based on the connections and their amperage.

Can another charger damage my MacBook?

If you buy an official MacBook charger from Apple itself, you can rest assured that choosing the wrong charger will not damage your equipment. Apple takes great care of these aspects.

It is true that there is a wide variety of models, from 29 / 30W, up to 87W, the most powerful, which will in no way overload your laptop or damage its battery as long as you use the official Apple one.

They also won’t allow your MacBook to charge faster than normal, so don’t think buying a more powerful one will give you much faster charging capabilities.

Another thing to keep in mind is that purchasing a drive that is rated too low for your device will result in the MacBook laptop not charging at all.

Chargers for the current MacBook lineup

Currently, the MacBook lineup includes MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air. Each of them requires a different charger, which we will list below.

Among those that are the MacBook Air, we have several alternatives. On the one hand, there are those presented in October 2018 which are worth Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connector to offer a universal port that supports charging.

On the other hand, the previous generation of MacBook Air seems not to support USB-C charging for which you will need a 45W MagSafe type power adapter 2.

Then there’s another holdover from Apple’s past in the current catalog, with the 15-inch MacBook Pro (2015), for which you’ll need a 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter.

At this point, it should be noted that the latest MacBook models with an M1 chip presented by Apple use the type of USB-C connection with a power adapter recommended by the company 61 W. Take a look at the MacBook Air M1 review. by Manzana.

Check your cable

Before replacing the entire power charger, it is advisable to verify that the cable you are using matches the rating of your device. Since the introduction of USB-C chargers, cables have been offered separately from the AC adapter so that they can be easily mixed.

Official Apple cables often have the words “Designed by Apple” in California and assembled in China. With them there will also be an alphanumeric serial number which indicates which charger they belong to.

Those that start with the C4M or FL4 markings are designed for the 29 / 30W USB-C adapters used by the MacBook (2015 and later).

Those that start with DLC or CTC can be used with the 61W or 87W USB-C adapters used by MacBook Pro (2016 and later).

If the cable does not have a printed serial number, Apple recommends contacting company technical support since you may be entitled to its replacement.

Which MacBook do I have?

If your device is older than any of the above models, you should first determine which model it is and year of manufacture before purchasing a compatible charger.
