There are a total of five different iPhones that will stop receiving updates in 2022.
After the official launch of iOS 16, Apple shared the official list of iPhones compatible with the new operating system. Thus, we were able to find all iPhone models that will stop updating in 2023and there are several models.
The list is not too long, but it is includes some surprises that few of us expected. It was really only expected – following the logical trail Apple’s cycles leave behind – that only three iPhone models would stop updating in 2023, but sadly there will be more. We expected three and in the end there will be up to five iPhones that will no longer receive updates.
iPhone models that will no longer receive updates in 2023
Officially we have five iPhone models that did not receive iOS 16 and so they will stop updating this same 2023 when Apple stops releasing updates to iOS 15 and iOS 16. On the other hand, it must be included in the list two other models that they will not be updated to iOS 17 in 2023.
Officially, these iPhone models will no longer receive support this year:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8Plus
These seven iPhone models will remain on iOS 15 and iOS 16, so will stop receiving software updates after summer. At this point, the iPhone 6s will have received 7 years of support, the original iPhone SE will have received 6.5 years of support, and the iPhone 7 will have had 6 years of support.

How long will these iPhones receive updates?
Apple has always communicated publicly that all of its devices are supported for at least a five-year cycle. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models will not be an exception in this year 2023. We will have to see if the iPhone XR also enters the list, although in principle it should not be so.
In the case of the first generation iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone SE models, they stopped updating after the release of iOS 16. For their part, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus will only receive updates from September 2023, with the arrival of iOS 17. Apple will soon release the last update to iOS 16, and it will be the last that these five models of iPhone will receive. So, these are all iPhone models that will stop receiving support in September 2023.
Of course, we have to take something into account. Apple recently released security updates for older iPhonesNot too long ago we saw an iOS 12 update for older iPhones and more recently an iOS 15.7.3 update with security patches that fixed some system vulnerabilities. It should therefore not be excluded that Apple will launch in the near future. new updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16 fixing some security issues for the seven iPhone models that weren’t updated in 2023, following in the wake of iOS 16.3, an update clearly focused on the area of security.
As with the iPhone, there are also many other Apple devices that will also stop receiving software updates in 2023. New operating systems they left out several models of Apple Watch, Mac and iPadso this year Apple will stop supporting more than 15 different devices.
