AirPods Pro and their pads

In the keynote for this month of September, a few weeks ago, Apple presented the 2nd generation AirPods Pro. Headset with the new H2 chip and new noise reduction algorithms that lead the main improvements. A support document warns new users of these headsets that Apple recommends not using 1st generation AirPods tips with 2nd generation AirPods. However, users have tested and both pads are compatible. What’s going on? Why does Apple not recommend its use? We tell you.

The tips of the 2nd generation AirPods Pro are different

The news came via the English support document from How to choose tips for your AirPods Pro. It should be remembered that the 2nd generation of these headphones includes four different pad sizes of silicon. Therefore, the size XS is added to those already existing in the previous generation: S, M and L. The user can change and select their size to find the perfect size in a few simple steps on the iPhone itself.

However, the support note commented the following:

The ear tips have been specially designed for your generation of AirPods Pro, to provide the most faithful audio experience. Therefore, use the eartips that came with your AirPods Pro. AirPods Pro (1st Gen) eartips have a noticeably denser mesh than AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) eartips.

With that Apple recommends that you do not use the ear tips of the 1st generation headphones with the 2nd generation headphones. However, users have tried it and there doesn’t seem to be any physical problem with using it. They also don’t hear any difference from the originals.

Why is buffer swapping not recommended? According to Apple, the mesh design of the 2nd generation is a little thicker, so the pads must accommodate this thickness to avoid sound changes. The smart thing on Apple’s part would have been to completely modify the pads if they wanted strict compatibilities.

However, considering that each pair of pads costs 10 dollars, it is understandable that users want to use the 1st generation if they have it. On the other hand, if a user has already bought AirPods Pro for 300 dollars, it would be nothing to buy additional pads for only ten dollars.
