It sounds like some kind of spell for the superstitious to ward off bad omens, but it’s actually science. Putting salt in the toilet has many proven benefits for prevent certain bacteria. That’s why it’s now emerging as something of a TikTok trend, and as absurd as it sounds, it makes sense.
It is something that also reminds us a somewhat peculiar hobby that legendary Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had. His habit of going barefoot is well known, but not to the extent that, some say, those feet could have gone through the toilet before. A somewhat unhealthy mania, but which would have made a lot of sense for Jobs.
The (alleged) benefits of putting salt in the toilet…
Some studies show how sensitive certain bacteria and fungi are to salt components. The disinfectant effects can also be a good reason to flush this cooking ingredient down the toilet. In addition to eliminating bad odors.
Now, it must be said that the reason why some TikTokers put salt in their toilets is not enough. Not at least if we take this into account the action of salt alone in insufficiency. Typically, other chemical agents are needed to completely eliminate the microorganisms that accumulate in the toilet bowl.
It is more, in PVC pipes could be dangerous, since salt tends to corrupt them. However, it is recommended to use it in combination with baking soda or oil, although if you are looking for good effectiveness it is better to use bleach or other liquids prepared for disinfect toilets and sold in any supermarket.
…and why Steve Jobs set foot there
We do not know whether or not the man who was CEO of Apple until 2011, the year of his death, put salt in his toilets. What is said is that among his many eccentricities there was that of get your feet wet there to relieve stress. Or at least that’s what some like Mike Markkula, Apple’s CEO for two years, say.
And it is said that in the end it is a legend because, despite the testimonies of men like Markkula, Jobs never admitted to this strange mania, nor what would be the exact reason why dipping his feet in the toilet could help him reduce his stress.
What we know better is that His foot hygiene was not the most remarkable.. Whether he plunged them into the toilet or not, it is said that in his youth, and having already founded Apple, he tended to go barefoot everywhere. At most a few sandals when there was snow.
That in meetings Steve Jobs would climb on tables and walk around with bare, dirty feet was not the most pleasant thing for those who accompanied him and, in fact, Markkula claims that on one occasion they had to throw him out of the room and demand he go take a shower.
