Confusion may arise because today Nvidia confirmed the launch of the new RTX 4090D; Although this looks like an evolution of the “monster” that is the normal RTX 4090, in reality it is quite the opposite, and it is better to wait for the next “Super” versions of the Nvidia range which are expected in the weeks to come. .
To understand this mess, you first have to understand why Nvidia was forced to launch the RTX 4090D: it’s a graphics card exclusive for the Chinese market, although there seems to be little reason to buy it imported or from a specialty store if you can get it. And the RTX 4090D is a stripped down version of the original RTX 4090 created to avoid trade restrictions imposed by the United States.
Last October, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banned the export to China of certain hardware components ideal for developing artificial intelligence and running advanced models. The FTC’s goal is prevent China from gaining an advantage in AI development, which gained so much prominence last year. However, this assumes that commercial products that were not initially designed for Artificial Intelligence are also affected; such as the RTX 4090, whose chip is particularly suited to this type of task.
Nvidia’s solution was to launch a specific version of the RTX 4090 for China, which has certain functions blocked at the driver level and cannot access all the advantages of the original model; Actually, It’s less powerful by having fewer CUDA, Tensor and RT cores, performance will therefore be affected even if the frequencies and memory bus are the same. At least the TDP has been reduced by 25W, so it should consume less.
Costing the same as a normal RTX 4090, it is not advisable to look for this new RTX 4090D; The good news is that very soon we will no longer need it. It’s no secret Nvidia is preparing a new generation of its ‘Super’ range, which will probably be presented next January. Concretely, three models are expected: the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super. These models will be upgraded versions of current cards, with more cores and general performance improvements; It is obvious that Nvidia wants to compete directly with AMD’s RX 7800 and RX 7800 XT, so it will be interesting to see the price they will finally have in Europe.
