New controversy in preparation for Netflix. The streaming service is preparing significant changes in subscriptions, which could force users to pay more, or having to accept advertisements while watching series and films. At the moment, Europe is not on the list of affected countries, but as happened with the ban on Netflix account sharing, it may be a matter of time.
Currently, Netflix offers four types of different subscriptions: Standard with anuncios (5.49 dollars daily), Basic (7.99 dollars daily), Standard (12.99 dollars daily) and Premium (17.99 dollars monthly). However, the basic plan is a “secret”, because Netflix hides it from new users on the official website; you have to expand the plan list to see it.
The reason why Netflix “hides” the basic plan, even though it is more expensive, is that it is convenient for users to sign up for the Standard plan with ads, which generates advertising revenue for you each time we initiate a content playback. On the other hand, the Basic plan is preferred for those who cannot stand ads and do not want to upgrade to the Standard plan because they consider that the Full HD resolution is not a sufficient reason to pay 3 dollars more per month. However, they may soon have no choice.
Say goodbye to the Netflix Basic package
And it is that Netflix just dropped the basic plan from its list of plans available in two countries: the United States and the United Kingdom. The official page now includes a message that “the basic plan is no longer available to new users or new users”; therefore, it is no longer possible to create a new Netflix account with the basic plan, which was the cheapest plan without ads.
From now on, Netflix only has one “cheap” option: Standard with ads which, as its name suggests, displays advertising. The only way to avoid ads is to pay more than double for the Standard plan, which in addition to removing ads allows downloading content and adding a member who does not live with us.
In this way, Netflix eliminated a middleman option for millions of users, forcing new accounts to choose between ads or pay much more; the intentions of the company are clear and therefore it is very likely that Europe will be the next to lose the basic plan. And it is that in the UK and the US, Netflix has already hidden the basic plan on its website, just as it did in Europe last year, so it seems inevitable; although the company has made no statement in this regard.
At least, users who already have the basic plan are not affected. Netflix clarified that these users do not have to change plans and can continue with the same benefits and prices as the Basic plan even if it is not available to other users. They will be able to continue using the basic plan until they switch plans or until they cancel the account.
