MacPaw, a leading developer of software for macOS and iOS, today released its new report “iOS Market Insights for Setapp in the EU.” The study, conducted by the alternative App Store of MacPaw Setapp Mobile surveyed over 1,200 iOS users from different European Union countries, including France, Germany, and USA.

Today’s users expect more from their apps

  • Thousands of new apps hit the App Store every day. This huge offering is overwhelming, but sometimes it doesn’t meet current needs.

  • Nearly 40% of users express frustration with the limitations of free features, that require you to make in-app purchases to enjoy all the features. A very similar percentage (38%) express concerns about app security and data privacy.

  • Lack of clear information hurts the user experience. About 20% of users believe that current app descriptions are unclear and it is difficult to understand their purpose and benefits. In addition, almost 20% of respondents say that the excess of results when searching makes the process of finding specific apps difficult.

The report highlights significant user dissatisfaction with the current system for obtaining and managing apps on iOS devices. In fact, 25% of users have difficulty calibrating the value of an app before downloading it.

However, the study reveals an interesting opportunity in this area: 80% of users surveyed expressed interest in trying a third-party app store. This willingness also extends to developers: 60% were willing to include their apps on platforms outside of the official App Store.

For now, the official iOS App Store is still the leader, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
