Xiaomi isn’t stopping. The tech giant is expanding fearlessly, even developing its own electric car. The company is committed to doing things its own way, and so far, it’s seeing a lot of success, such as the launch of its own Android-based system, the new HyperOS.
After “becoming independent” in software, hardware independence may come. According to the latest rumor, Xiaomi develops its own SoC (system on chip) that will be used by your future devices such as mobile phones or tablets. This way, the company would not have to “jump through the hoops” of the manufacturers that currently dominate the market, Qualcomm and MediaTek.
It is a move that makes sense for Xiaomi, which follows in the footsteps of other industry benchmarks such as Apple and Google; in both cases, these brands have opted for their own designs in order to prioritize the aspects they consider most important and differentiate themselves from the rest of the manufacturers.
As revealed by Yogesh Brar in X, Xiaomi’s first processor would not aim for the highest, and would opt for a slightly more humble beginning; the chip would have similar performance to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
Where the Xiaomi processor may have an advantage is energy efficiency. Rumor has it that it will use TSMC’s 4nm N4P manufacturing process, which is also used in the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300. For 5G connectivity, Xiaomi has chosen to partner with another Chinese manufacturer, Unisoc, which will handle the 5G modem integrated into the chip itself.
All this means that Xiaomi’s first processor It will probably be released on a mid-range mobile.. Xiaomi’s goal with this project is not to beat the best in the industry, at least not yet, but to reduce costs; instead of paying whatever Qualcomm and Mediatek decide to pay, Xiaomi can save money by designing its own mid-range chip, where margins are not as high as in the high-end.
Xiaomi is expected to introduce its new chip in the first quarter of 2025, so the first device using it would likely arrive in the middle of the year.
