Of the three major events Apple hosts each year, WWDC is the most trusted: Every June for 15 years, like clockwork, Apple has held a major gathering point for its developer partners and announced updates for Software.
In comparison, the iPhone launch in September and the spring event in March/April seem almost unpredictable.
In this article, we’ve listed the major announcements (and some of the smaller additions) to expect at WWDC next June.
Some of them (Apple’s Big Five operating system updates, obviously) are as predictable as the timing of the event. But we believe that Apple will also keep some surprises.
What is WWDC?
WWDC stands for “Worldwide Developers Conference” (in Spanish, World Developers Conference). They are the developers of Software who create applications for Apple platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.
The company invites a group of developers to its campus (or, more recently, gives them access to an online-only event) and lets them know about the system-wide changes coming to these platforms next year so that they are ready. Conferences, events networking and workshops.
In reality, while the event is the focus of developers, it also ends up being a press event that Apple uses to announce its plans for Software to everybody.
When will WWDC 2022 take place?
We believe that WWDC 2022 will start on June 6, although another possibility could be the following Monday, i.e. June 13.
WWDC is a big event that lasts a week. Start with the opening speech opens Monday morning (although if you see it from Europe it’s already afternoon/night) and it lasts for five days. It is usually held in the first half of June, although the pandemic has caused a slight delay in 2020.
Here are the dates for the last ten WWDC events:
- WWDC 2021: June 7-11
- WWDC 2020: June 22-26
- WWDC 2019: June 3-7
- WWDC 2018: June 4-8
- WWDC 2017: June 5-9
- WWDC 2016: June 13-17
- WWDC 2015: June 8-12
- WWDC 2014: June 2-6
- WWDC 2013: June 10-14
- WWDC 2012: June 11-15
How to watch WWDC 2022 live
The last two WWDC celebrations have only been in line (and we believe the same will happen in 2022), but whether the “participants” are there in person or tune in virtually, Apple will livestream the opening speech inaugural for all from its website and YouTube.
You can follow the presentation live from iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and even from a PC. To learn more, don’t miss our article on how to watch WWDC live.
What Apple will announce at WWDC 2022
Here are our predictions for what Apple will present at the next edition of WWDC:
iOS16
The star of the event, simply because of the high number of iPhone users all over the planet. If you have a fairly new iPhone (iOS 15 runs on iPhone 6s, so anyone with an iPhone 7 or later should be able to install iOS 16), you’ll be able to install the new version of iOS when it’s released in the fall. 2022 .
But before that, the beta tests will arrive. Apple will announce iOS 16 at WWDC 2022 and release the first developer beta (registered app developers only) almost immediately after launch. opening speech.
Do not install this beta unless you are a developer, and also keep in mind that it will be unfinished. There could be serious flaws in the Software beta and it might even crash your device.
Over the next three months, this beta (and the public beta, which will be released a little later and will lag behind the developer beta for the entire testing process) will be modified, fixed, and updated several times until it reaches the final version. final public release of iOS 16.0 from (probably) September.
iPadOS 16
For iPad users, iPadOS 16 is coming, which will likely have most of the new features of iOS 16 but adapted to a larger screen interface.
When Apple’s two mobile operating systems parted ways in 2019, they were similar in many ways, but the iPad version is gradually heading into its own realm.
macOS 13
What has Apple prepared to replace Monterey? We’ll find out at WWDC 2022.
It should be macOS version 13.0, but don’t take that for granted: Apple has used a single version number for 18 years: from macOS 10.0 (Cheetah) in 2001 to macOS 10.15 (Catalina) in 2019.
But it seems to have finally left that nonsense behind, as the last two versions have their own number: macOS 11 Big Sur and macOS 12 Monterey.
As for the Californian reference which will give its name to macOS 13.0, we are betting on Mamooth, in reference to Mamooth Lakes.
watch OS 9
The new Apple Watch OS will also be unveiled at WWDC 2022. It’s not as big as the iPhone, iPad and Mac updates described above, but it could introduce important health and fitness features. fitness. aptitude.
Last year’s watchOS 8 update was available for those who had a Series 3. If you have a Series 4 or later, you should have no problem receiving the 2022 update, and Series 3 might even have another year to live.
tvOS 16
tvOS, the most low-key operating system of Apple’s Big Five, is the platform that runs on Apple TV.
Last year’s tvOS 15 update added new Siri features, multi-user recommendations and the ability to share on-screen shows with friends via SharePlay. What will we have this year? You’ll find out at WWDC.
homeOS
The big five operating systems could become six, as Apple is said to be working on a new operating system called homeOS.
This would be the new name of Software which works on HomePod and HomePod mini, currently called HomePod OS. Go through the trouble of changing the brand of Software I would suggest that Apple wants to give more weight to features it might release for HomePods in the future.
Of course, it’s worth remembering that Apple stopped making the full-size HomePod last March, so homeOS would only work on one device, which leaves us wondering about the brand’s smart home strategy in 2022.
Do you have any other HomeOS-based products up your sleeve?
hardware products
WWDC is an event focused on the latest in Software, but on several occasions Apple has taken the opportunity to also launch products from Equipment.
If it happens again, it’s more likely to be Mac-related than iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or AirPods. The iPhone 3GS debuted at WWDC in 2009, but only Mac products have been released since.
Apple launched the iMac Pro, along with updates to the iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro, at WWDC 2017; announced a new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR in June 2019. And more recently, when no new product was released Equipment real that year, Apple’s transition from Intel to its own processors in the Mac lineup was revealed at WWDC 2020. It was the biggest announcement of Equipment of the company throughout the year.
What’s on the update list? Equipment from Apple? A lot, but hopefully a lot of it will be announced at the company’s spring event, which will probably be held in March or April. The new AirPods Pro will likely appear in the spring; the iPhone SE 3 too; the new iPad Air too.
But what about the new large-screen iMac aimed at professionals? It could launch at WWDC 2022. The same could happen with the Mac mini, which was scheduled to launch in the fall of last year.
