The worst fears have been confirmed: the practice of Netflix account sharing has come to an end. The business needs more revenue, and since the plan with ads hasn’t been as successful as expected, the next step is to end a habit that has allowed it for years.
[La limitación de cuentas en Netflix cambiará la manera de entender la plataforma]
It looked like Netflix had recanted, but in reality what happened was that it mistakenly posted the plans for some Latin American countries on the Spanish page, removing them when it s realized it; That’s what he was referring to when he said there had been “a mistake” last week. In reality, the plan to limit accounts has always been real and it was launched from today.
Say goodbye to Netflix account sharing
In an update announced on the official page, the company talks about “new ways to share Netflix”, although in reality it will implement more control over users and how they share the account.
The great novelty is that from now on, users will have to pay 5.99 dollars more for each person away from home who want to access your account. In this way, “sub-accounts” can be created, which have their own profile, history and recommendations, as well as a username and password; in other words, it’s a way to create a Netflix account associated with another principal.
For more embarrassment, in Portugal adding accounts will be cheaperremaining at 3.99 dollars per person.
Netflix now limits accounts to one household
Users in Europe can add a maximum of two people which they do not live with to create a sub-account, so in theory the final price of the subscription may increase by 11.98 dollars. Sub-account users will be able to create master accounts and transfer their data once they become “independent”.
Sub-accounts are only available to Standard or Premium plan users, and Basic and Basic with Ads users cannot add others.
This is how Netflix accounts and their limitations remain
Netflix tries to justify this change with information: it specifies that more than 100 million households share their accountsand it reduces the company’s revenue and, therefore, its ability to invest in more productions such as new series and new movies (even if most end up being canceled anyway).
To implement all of this, Netflix will reach out to subscribers to set their primary location, so everyone who lives with us can use Netflix; although the limitation of the number of simultaneous screens is maintained, which is 4 maximum in the Premium plan. Users will be able to control who accesses their account from a new menu.
Despite all this, Netflix made it clear that it continues to allow users to watch Netflix while traveling on their personal devices or on hotel TVs, although it did not specify how it intends to control this.
