The iPhone 16 releasing in 2024 could feature A18 chips on both non-Pro and Pro models, according to a report from MacRumors. This and other information is based on sources who have seen early builds of iOS 18, the next version of the iPhone operating system.
Apple has codenamed iOS 18 Crystal and contains references to iPhone models D47, D48, D93 and D94, which could be iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro respectively and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. iOS 18 also indicates that these phones will use a chip identified as t8140 (codenamed Tahiti), which is the A18. It’s unclear whether the iPhone 16 Pro models will have A18 Pro-branded chips and the non-Pro phones’ A18-branded chip, but Apple is rumored to use that nomenclature. Specifications for the A18 were not cited.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in February that Apple could be developing an iPhone 16 Ultra, which would likely have “more camera improvements, a faster chip and perhaps an even bigger screen” than the Pro model Max. However, it doesn’t appear that iOS 18 refers to an iPhone 16 Ultra, nor is it clear whether iOS 18’s D94 reference is actually an Ultra model.
MacRumors also points out that iOS 18 refers to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules manufactured by Broadcom. Bloomberg’s Gurman reported that Apple is developing its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, but that parts are planned for a 2025 release.
Multiple reports have indicated that Apple is working on its own 5G modem that would replace the Qualcomm part currently in use, but the project has encountered several delays that prevent its use in the iPhone 16.
