The smartphone market is changing, after 2023 was one of the worst years in memory, with a general decline in units distributed. The only manufacturer that has been saved is Apple, and it is therefore no coincidence that the new objective of the rest of the brands is to “eat” part of the iPhone market.
Although brands have traditionally avoided going head-to-head with the iPhone, the new strategy is to collide directly with Apple and “sabotage” its launch. Last year, we already got a glimpse of this, with Google’s Pixel 8 reveal event held just a few weeks after the iPhone 15 event. Samsung has also taken steps in this direction, bringing forward the presentation of the Galaxy S24.
The latest leak from the social network Weibo indicates that Samsung will not be the only one to bring forward the launch of its mobile phones to get closer to that of the iPhone. The Xiaomi 15 could arrive much sooner than expectedand mass production could begin in September, just when Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 16.
The key to this change lies in the processor. Xiaomi wants to be the first to use the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4in the same way that the Xiaomi 14 was the first Android mobile to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. In addition to being able to boast about it, Xiaomi would be interested in being the first to demonstrate the improvements of the new Qualcomm processor and its new cores Nuvia.
It would be based on TSMC’s N3E manufacturing process, with cores designed by Qualcomm itself instead of using ARM’s Cortex cores as until now; all thanks to the acquisition of Nuvia, a company founded by former Apple engineers who worked on Apple’s A-series processors that are now used by the iPhone. Therefore, that “Xiaomi 15 takes on the iPhone” would not only be a way of speaking, it would be a real challenge; It is said that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be up to 40% faster than the current generation.
Apart from the processor, the Xiaomi 15 would have more advanced features, particularly in the Pro model with its new curved screen with edges of just 0.6mm (compared to 0.9 mm for the Xiaomi 14 Pro). The rest of the features have not yet been disclosed, but if the launch is finally brought forward, it shouldn’t be long before we learn more.
