A divisive adaptation
Certainly one of the most anticipated series of 2022, The Rings of Power, an ambitious adaptation of several Middle-earth tales written by JRR Tolkien, has had a frantic broadcast. Even before release, some of the community expressed their concerns about the creative choices being made by the production. Considered too “awakened” or removed from the universe created by the British author, The Rings of Power was widely divided before and during its airing. At the end of the eight episodes, the critics were not necessarily convinced by the whole, especially by the audience. The series receives an audience score of 3/5 on AlloCiné, which is significantly less delicate than the 2.5/10 score on Metacritic: The Rings of Power. Disappointing, at least on the surface. Because the show is a hit for Amazon.
One series to rule them all
This is probably more than a relief for Amazon. The company just announced that Rings of Power was their highest-grossing original creation to date, with more than 100 million viewers. More than promising figures for the most expensive series ever, which nonetheless remain quite relative given the giants of the Netflix stable. For comparison, The Rings of Power would reach 24 billion viewer minutes and be measured in minutes. That’s worse than The Witcher season 1 (32.5 billion), Dahmer (51.4 billion), Wednesday (74.2 billion), and the behemoth Stranger Things (81 billion for season 4). So, Amazon still has a long way to go to catch up with its main competitor, but it’s certain that these numbers will please producers after the critics’ spook.
