News culture “10,000 ships and 300 dragons” This Game of Thrones spin-off will cost a fortune: The bill for HBO will be high
In a publication on his blog, author George RR Martin formalized the return of a Game of Thrones spin-off that was abandoned several years ago! What is it?
In a few days, on June 17, in France, the Game of Thrones universe will return to the fore with the release of the second season of House of the Dragon. The setbacks of House Targaryen (and the conflict between Alicent Hightower | Rhaenyra) will soon find a bloody answer and all this can be seen here on Max, HBO’s streaming platform. But this is not the only Game of Thrones spin-off in the pipeline! George RR Martin has just made it official himself, in an article about him Blog, the return of a project that was abandoned several years ago. That is ten thousand shipsa series set a thousand years before the events of the main show.
A promising project
More specifically, the series focuses on Nymeria, Princess of the Rhoynars (the first inhabitants of the Essos region). During the so-called Second Spice War, she loses all her allies and is forced to set sail with her entire people aboard a massive fleet of ships in the hope of escaping slavery. “We are very excited about this spin-off,” says George RR Martin in his blogbefore adding: “Although we’re still trying to figure out how to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”

A renowned author at the top
The project was supposed to start in 2021 under the direction of Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential). Now a certain Eboni Booth, who just won the Pulitzer Prize for her play “Primary Trust,” is in charge. “She is an incredibly talented young playwright and a joy to work with.” says George RR Martin on his blog. “When she wasn’t writing and producing her award-winning plays on Broadway (and elsewhere), she was busy with me and HBO.” It is obviously too early to talk about a release date, as the author only speaks of a “pilot.” What is certain, however, is that “Ten Thousand Ships” will cost a lot… In the past, Helgeland has compared the project to, among other things, the Odyssey and the biblical story of Moses.
