Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty was released in 2014. And even though 14 years have passed since then, the game is still very popular. In April 2024, the game narrowly missed the top 10 of our list of the 150 best strategy games.
Back then, developer Blizzard intentionally built in a mission that players regularly failed – until now. A fan recently managed to successfully complete this impossible mission. Or rather, to survive.
YouTuber solves the seemingly unsolvable in 40 minutes
Specifically, it's about the mission Utter Darkness. This is the final mission of the Zeratul campaign in Wings of Liberty. In it, players take control of a Protoss army that defends its base.
The camp is attacked by tons of Zergs, who inevitably overrun the Protoss base at some point during the mission. That's exactly what he wanted YouTuber Davey Gunface prevent and has developed a plan to destroy the Zergs. You can find the video here:

In the almost 40-minute video, the YouTuber explains step by step how he did it. Basically, it's about cleverly manipulating the AI and getting it to take certain paths. The enemy units are then in an unprotected position on these.
Shield of Aiur is the key
The key to success lies in the arrival of the last wave of allied units. Here Artanis arrives with the Shield of Aiur. In the episode, Davey Gunface combines two of this mothership's abilities:
- Vortex: Pulls nearby units into a black hole.
- Mass recall: Can recall units to mothership position.
With this combination, the YouTuber places around 24 Templars in a small crevice on the side of a cliff.

Blizzard has just packed two absolute real-time strategy story highlights into Game Pass
There they are unreachable for the enemy. These Templars can transform into Archons and stop the waves of flying units that would normally be deadly to the Protoss army.
After the air units are destroyed and the enemy only has troops on the ground, the game comes to a standstill. Because the AI is no longer able to reach the Protoss entrenched in the gap. In addition, no new Zerg units will be produced to avoid lag.
You can take the whole thing to the extreme by destroying all enemies, except the Overseers, with cloaked units. The Overseers then retreat to the edge of the map – a “very realistic win condition,” according to Davey Gunface.
However, there is no victory screen for this – especially since the Protoss survived, but are condemned to eke out their future existence on an inaccessible cliff.
