There are tons of texture packs for Minecraft. However, many of the modders also want to be financially rewarded for their work, at least in the case of the Windows 10 version from the Microsoft Store. Accordingly, primarily paying customers can enjoy the best graphics here. A new graphics mod now claims to be a represent a free alternative to want.
Everything for buyers only? Paid mods are not uncommon in Minecraft. Starting with the StylizedResourcePack, through special shaders such as Continuum to the SEUS PTGI project, in most cases you have to support the modders via Patreon to get the best graphics. Photocraft is therefore quite an exception to the rule, even if it is not the only one is. Because a large number of texture mods for the Java edition of the game often only deliver resolutions of up to 512×512 pixels.
Realism in Minecraft
The “PhotoCraft” mod, which has been in development since March 2020, aims to enable realistic graphics and uses a technology called POM to give textures more depth.
They also offer high quality normal and specular maps. Three screenshots of the modder demonstrate how good this looks in the game:
The 2.4 gigabyte mod itself is available in two different variants. Once with a resolution of 1024×1024 for older systems and then again in 2048×2048if you have a modern computer.
Once installed, it changes the well-known Minecraft pixel graphics and the blocks look much more realistic than before. You can’t completely remove the block look with it, after all, it’s a cornerstone of the game.
Installation
The texture pack itself does not require the Optifine mod, but you can only view all the effects of the new textures with the aforementioned mod. These include CIT, CTM, CEM, emissions and the aforementioned POM / PBR as well as the specular textures. The use itself, however, is simple:
- Extract the archive into the folder% appdata% /. Minecraft / resourcepacks
- Started Minecraft
- Opens the options
- Select “Resource Packs”
- Now open the photocraft archive
- Activates photocraft
The mod itself was developed for the Java version of Minecraft and will not work with the Bedrock version. When trying to install it for the latter, there is an error message.
How does the graphics get even better?
Minecraft has natively supported ray tracing since December 2020, after the feature was tested for a long time in a public beta phase. The graphics feature does not work with the Java version, however, only with the Windows 10 version.

The game not only gets better graphics, but also more and more content. You have been able to play the “Caves & Cliffs” update since November 2020. It not only brings new animals like the cute axolotls, but also new gameplay elements like lightning rods or binoculars.
