2023 was the gaming year of the topsy-turvy world
The gaming year 2023 actually gave us a lot of joy. Above all, we are happy that after a barren pandemic year and many postponements, a lot of games were finally allowed to come onto the market.
However, the big names in particular often fell short of expectations. For example, Blizzard, which, despite all the gameplay qualities of Diablo 4, seems to have underestimated how difficult it is to run a service game. Or Bethesda, which was both courageous (new brand) and remarkably courageous (old-fashioned game design) with Starfield.
On the other hand, games that almost nobody had on their list at the beginning of the year dominate. Of course, there was no question that Larian could develop excellent role-play ing games. We wouldn’t have expected that Baldur’s Gate 3 would become one of, if not THE, defining game of this year.

The same applies to the summer success of Dave the Diver, the rebirth of Remedy with Alan Wake 2, the remarkably strong strategy game year (apart from The Settlers) and more!
In the 2023 annual review, Géraldine, Dimi and Micha discuss the past twelve months, their surprises, their highs and lows.
And of course we discuss the paradox of the year: Although more good games have been released than in a long time, the industry is in crisis and thousands of people are losing their jobs. After the pandemic boom, there is a hangover feeling, the games industry is consolidating again and scraping together its money.
And that brings strange things to fruition, we just call it “Unity scandal”. And does anyone really want Disney to buy Electronic Arts?
