The new 2XKO information was revealed live during a live panel with executive producer Tom Cannon and game director Shaun Rivera during Evo 2024. During the panel, Tom Cannon revealed some preliminary details about how the free-to-play game will be profitable.
“You can be the best player in the world for free, without spending a dime!” Cannon said at the start of his presentation. Moments later, he revealed that all fighters in the game would be available without paying (while noting that it would take a little effort). However, as part of this model, Cannon also talked about how Riot plans to make money.

“We’re going to sell you stuff. But the stuff we’re selling you is going to be really high quality,” Cannon said. Like emoji stickers (like in Legends of Runeterra) and skins for various heroes! In fact, the duo even showed off a new skin for Dynasty Ahri, showing off a few seconds of gameplay. According to Cannon, the skin’s model and VFX have been changed, and all skins will have a standard selection of nine chromas (Riot’s term for color palette changes).
Cannon also noted that this Ahri skin will be unlocked through the game’s first battle pass in the upcoming alpha lab playtest, which appears to be running concurrently with the initial test. All in all, this monetization system feels a lot like League of Legends’ approach, although pricing and further details remain unclear.
