Does PS5 need a replacement? What we do know is that Sony plans to release more consoles. Last year it updated the original PS5 model with a slightly smaller redesign but, for all practical purposes, the same technology. Now, the rumors about the quality leap are not only gaining strength, but the development kits have begun to be distributed and media como Insider Gaming They corroborate what we can expect from PS5 Pro. Or whatever it ends up being called.
The essential: Sony has not announced the PS5 Pro. According to Tom Henderson, who has always demonstrated that he has first-hand information, he has received from from several independent sources -and anonymous- the characteristics that will make the difference of the desktop that is internally called Trinity. The most striking thing: will have 33.5 Teraflops
The information and documents referred to by Henderson, in fact, are those that are being distributed to Third Parties to develop games and update existing ones with PS5 Pro in mind. And, as you will see, according to what we have mentioned we are talking about substantial improvements:
- From the outset, PS5 Pro would offer 33.5 teraflops. More than double Xbox Series X.
- Compatibility with resolutions up to 8K in future versions of the SDK
- Ray tracing will be double or triple. In some cases, up to four times as much.
- An enhancement/antialiasing solution called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling)
- And what about speed? It has been said that it will have a memory transfer rate of 18000 MT/s (megatransfers per second) and 30 WGP. To get an idea of the latter, an RDNA1 CU is half of a WGP
- Regarding the rendering, it will be 45% faster than that of the current PS5
On the other hand, and as we already mentioned, Artificial Intelligence would be used to achieve better results in games. According to the documentation, we would be talking about:
- A custom machine learning architecture
- An AI accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8-bit computing / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point
Which brings us to the final, and most reasonable, question: When would PS5 Pro hit shelves? According to Insider Gamer, and as has been leaking since Activision Blizzard’s very lengthy purchase process, the idea would be for it to be available and for sale with a view to Christmas 2024. It is not something new. Something that may change from now on to the future, especially considering that there must be own and third-party games that take advantage of its features.
At this point it is worth remembering that neither Sony nor PlayStation have announced a PS5 Pro or whatever it ends up being called. But, to be honest, the roadmap drawn from 2022 has been fulfilled, including the remote player (PlayStation Portal) or a reduced model that only lacked the word Slim to be completely right. So, until this information is confirmed, denied or clarified, what we have on the table is data and not promises or guarantees. Yes, very promising data.
