News culture 40 million viewers: Rings of Power season 2 upsets some fans but is a hit on Amazon Prime Video
The Lord of the Rings always rhymes with commercial success, even in the small screen area with “The Rings of Power”: Season 2 is currently enjoy ing very good viewership, no insult to all those who nevertheless have many complaints about it.
A gigantic construction site
“Rings of Power”, which has been announced for some time, is one of the gigantic cinema projects: in fact, it is the most expensive television series in history, with a budget of around 200 million US dollars per season. After a first part in 2022, the second part started broadcasting at the end of August and while the sixth episode was recently released, We now have a little more insight into the audience ratings.
A few weeks ago we actually knew that the second season of Rings of Power was the top 1 on Prime Video in no less than 106 countries. An impressive number, but still lacking in depth, as we lacked the number of viewers: It is now a done deal and we have official information that there were more than forty million, eleven days after the first episode aired. Jennifer Salke, director of Amazon Studios, announced the information.
It remains to be seen what Amazon’s expectations were, but also the number of hours watched, another very important data metric that a competitor like Netflix, for example, does not hesitate to share. With such a budget, it would indeed be interesting to know whether the figure of 40 million viewers is enough, considering that 25 million viewers were already attracted at the start of the first season.
A series that is still criticized
The Lord of the Rings universe is a true pop culture institution: the books are timeless pillars, as are Peter Jackson’s films… and the Amazon series has chosen to take certain liberties with the script, even though it is set long before the events of the original trilogy. In Season 1 of Rings of Power, some viewers pointed the finger at the character of Galadriel, and more recently, in Season 2, X saw a minor controversy over the appearance of an Orc mother and her child.
