That the Japanese developers from From Software finally presented a first real trailer for Elden Ring was probably the Surprise par excellence at E3 2021.
So far we could only speculate what information the trailer reveals about the unofficial Dark Souls successor and the open game world – but that is now changing. Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has been talking to Video games and 4Players reveal numerous tangible information on gameplay, story and more. We therefore collect the most important news for you in this article.

6 new facts about Elden Ring
1. Die Story
It has been known for a long time that in Elden Ring you are a so-called Tarnished (in Europe: “defiled”) who has to save a world plunged into chaos – thanks to the interview we finally have concrete clues as to what it is about.
The eponymous Elden Ring is a powerful artifactwhich has broken into six pieces, which you should now collect again. The aim is to defeat chaos and restore the old order, which only ruins and stories are reminiscent of.
Most of the story is told in the game world itself, for example through descriptive texts on artefacts and equipment, but in contrast to Dark Souls, the Supporting characters play an important role in the plot play. For example, you will meet other heroes who are also looking for the pieces of the broken ring. These drive the action forward and should be able to significantly influence your decisions.
Depending on the order in which you meet the NPCs and how you interact with them, you can expect multiple ends. For a run-through of the story should be so round 30 to 40 hours of play be necessary. By the way, to see one of the endings you don’t have to kill all the bosses – it should be enough if you kill almost half of it.
2. Die Open World
Elden Rings Open World will not be a rattle off world from the darkest Ubisoft formula days: According to Miyazaki you should be able to explore the game world freely on the back of your horned mount and discover secrets and hidden areas in the process, but the PlayStation 2 classic Shadow of the Colossus serves as inspiration.
So there won’t be any big, bustling cities, also because the developers aren’t leaning too far out of the window with their first Open World and instead want to focus on their well-known strengths.
3. Die Legacy Dungeons
A bit of the old Dark Souls feeling awaits you in the so-called Legacy Dungeons. These are seamlessly embedded in the open world and appear in all possible forms: castles, dungeons, caves, catacombs – that reminds us a little of the dungeons in Skyrim.
Instead of open-world freedom, it is important here to feel your way step by step, because enemies or traps can wait around every corner. According to Miyazaki, there should also be a few here Puzzle passages give to solve.
4. The character classes
As in the Dark Souls games, Elden Ring starts again with a character creation. Like last time in Dark Souls 3, it should be back ten classes to choose from – but it is not yet known what exactly they are. Presumably, however, there will again be a colorful mixture of classic role-playing archetypes like Warriors, villains and magicians be available.
As always, these classes represent just a rough basis because with each level you can freely distribute your skill points on attributes such as strength, skill, intelligence, endurance and so on.
5. The combat system
The Game Director reveals in the interview that the combat system something more diverse than was previously designed. Of course, as usual, you can determine your style of play according to your own taste: for example, as a thickly armored knight with sword and shield, who blocks attacks instead of evading them. Or as a nimble villain who completely escapes enemy attacks with well-timed roles. Incidentally, endurance should no longer play such an important role.
In the Souls games there was always the opportunity to surprise enemies from behind and inflict powerful damage with a rear attack. Elden Ring now goes one better and wants to like in Sekiro a real stealth system that is supposed to make ambush attacks possible.
The mount is also used in combat: You can ride on enemies and plunge seamlessly into battle from the back of your mount. Also completely new is the fact that we can resurrect the souls of deceased enemies and bring them to our side as allies.
6. The multiplayer
If you want to fight online with or against other players, Elden Ring has made it a little easier. One should get help from friends at any time can, even in the Legacy Dungeons.
How exactly this works is not yet known – there may be a system similar to Monster Hunter World. Here you send out an emergency signal and a short time later your world is filled with helpful comrades.
However, cherished features like Phantoms, invasions and messages in the game world celebrate a comeback. The whole process is made much easier, however, as you shouldn’t have to collect any special resources like the “red eyeballs” for the multiplayer options.
